I came home to see a cake on the table, balloons on each kitchen chair, and a big sign that said Happy Birthday! I knew they didn’t brought the sign. They always kept the same sign to save money. I didn’t mind anymore because I didn’t care about my birthday anymore. My mom came downstairs and she stopped when she saw me. It’s like she seen a ghost.
“Gabe...what are you doing here? School isn’t over for another hour,” she said, rushing to me. She placed her hands on my cheeks and I let her. I was too tired to move away. She smiled and dropped her hands. “Well it doesn’t matter now. We can celebrate your birthday right now.”
I gave her a blank stare and she nodded. We walked into the kitchen and I sat down on the kitchen chair in front of the cake. I could tell it was a red velvet and vanilla. My favorite. But I don’t eat cake anymore. Why eat cake if it didn’t make me happy anymore? My dad came downstairs with a camera in his hands. I frowned when they started singing Happy Birthday to me.
“Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday Dear Gaaabbe. Happy Birthday tooo youuuu!” They clapped happily and laughed after they were done.
“So Gabe, do you have anything to say?” My dad asked. He pointed the camera to me and I sighed, pushing the cake away.
“I wished he was here,” I whispered.
Their happiness died. My dad turned his camera off and they sat next to me. My mom covered her mouth with her hand and hiccuped. My dad wrapped an arm around her shoulders and pulled her close to him. I didn’t want to kill their mood but I really wanted him back. I could tell him anything and he would listen to me. My dad shook his head and placed his hand on mine.
“Look, son. I know you missed him. We all missed him but we don’t want to lose you,” he said sadly. I moved my hand from his and shook my head.
“Have you lost your mind?!” I screamed. My mom and dad jumped. “Do you remember December 12th, 2013? Yeah, it was yesterday. And do you remember why that day is so important? No, you don’t because you know why? Because he’s gone! Cutting him off from this family isn’t going to make things right. It makes it worse for you and me.”
“No, it just makes it worse for you!” My dad yelled. He got up and flipped the chair over. “I’m sick of your bullshit and sadness. This guilt is making you mad, it’s making you sick. Your mother and I have been thinking-"
“I don’t care what you think. Leave me the hell alone.”
I ran out of the kitchen and upstairs, into my room. I slammed the door closed hard and jumped on my bed. I ruined my own birthday. Well, Caper fucked half of it but it’s mostly mine. My parents tried to do something nice but I don’t want something nice. I want him back. I squished the pillow into my face to stop the tears coming but they came anyways. I turned my head to the wall and cried softly. Why did he do it? Why did he have to go? I wished I went with him so I could be with him. I hiccuped shut my eyes tight. You didn’t have to go.
“It was my choice.”
Great now I’m hearing his voice. At least it’s close to what I wanted.
“Hey, I’m not a voice. Open your eyes.”
Okay, the voice sounded- “Real?”
I snapped my eyes opened and turned my head to see blue eyes. “Hey.”
My eyes rolled back in my head.
