Middle School Crushes & Third Wheeling
DEXTER
“Knock, knock, anyone home?”
“Come in,” I grumbled and then turned my head to face my wall, not bothering to see my new visitor.
For the past day or so, I have been avoiding any human contact at all costs and I have done so by keeping myself cooped up in my bedroom since yesterday evening. I was curled up in my bed wearing the most comfy clothes I could find (and there isn’t much because my mother forbids it. I’m 26 years old! You’d think I’d be able to pick my own wardrobe…)
Thankfully, my mother and father only came upstairs to check on me once, but I ordered them away. They fought me at first, but since my door was basically dead bolted shut, they decided not to pester me anymore than they’ve already have. Good, that’s one favour, now they just need to do a million more to make it up to me.
After Karina and I’s little encounter in the janitor closet yesterday, I went right to bed because I felt exhausted. The worst part is that I didn’t get an ounce of sleep and spent the night tossing and turning, worrying if Kat was okay.
Karina and I talked it over and thought that we should sleep on it and when we were rested up, we could think better about the situation. Agreeing with her, I went to my room and have been here ever since.
Karina creaked open my doorway and crossed her arms. I knew she was mad that I didn’t keep in contact with her after last night, but to be honest I was worrying about other things: my missing fiancée.
“Did you hear anything I just said, Dexter?”
Shoot, she was talking… What was she saying?
“You know it’s illegal to be in the prince’s chamber alone, right?” I asked smugly.
Karina smiled. “I guess I’m just a rebel then. So, what have you been doing all day? It looks like you’ve been having a nice time alone, by yourself, in the dark.”
I laughed dryly and sat up. My bed was against the wall of my room, so I was able to use the far wall as a back rest. I noticed that my room was freshly cleaned, due to the palace services, but sometimes, I just wished that I could be a regular adolescent man and just throw junk everywhere. It would make me feel less ‘babied’, I guess.
My room had four different chambers: A irregular sized bathroom, complete with a massive Jacuzzi and a walk in shower, a massive closet in which I’ve never stepped into because my family believed that servants must pick out my clothes because they don’t ‘trust me’. I have a game room, in which I never have time to use anymore due to my ‘kingdom duties’ and finally, I have the main chamber which holds my bed, bookshelves and other things I possess.
In my opinion, it is too much and since I only use two out of the four chambers, I find the whole place just a waste of space. My room was even an ugly green colour, mixed with shades of dark blue, which is why I liked to keep the place dark. It was just unappealing to the eye if you stared at the wall too long.
Karina cleared her throat eagerly, as if to get my undivided attention. I looked up at her and slightly smiled. She changed clothes and was now wearing comfier attire. Her loosely fitting burgundy t-shirt that flowed down to her knees, along with her sweat pants, made me think that we both had the same idea in mind.
“How did you get up here?” I asked her. Usually, the halls, especially near the royal chambers, were crowed with guards.
Karina flipped her wavy dark hair behind her shoulder and laughed. “Well, let’s just say that the guards in this part of the palace aren’t very motivated if you just bat an eyelash or two.”
