Caught In the Act & Questionable Motives
DEXTER
“Okay Dex, we just need to contact Kat’s father and tell it to him straight. No beating around the bush, you hear me?”
“Dexter, have you been listening to a word I’ve said?”
“Dexter!”
I blinked in surprise as Karina’s voice echoed through my brain. For the past few hours, Karina and I have been wandering throughout the palace while discussing a way to break it to Kat’s father that both of his daughters are missing. Karina had been suggesting from the beginning to just come clean by telling the truth, but I haven’t really put in an input on the matter.
To be honest, all I’ve been thinking about was that kiss that Karina and I shared while she just did all the talking.
We were walking down the main hall and thankfully no one was around because the day was coming to a close. Another day without Kat, another day closer to the wedding. It was scarier the more that I thought about it.
Suddenly, Karina gave a light punch to my arm. I winced, but said nothing as we continued to pace down the never ending palace hallway.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” Karina demanded, her volume rising.
“Can we talk about that kiss?” I said flatly while holding Karina by the shoulders to stop her from moving forward.
She looked up at me with a sad expression and sighed. “Dexter, there is nothing to talk about. It wasn’t meant to happen and-“
“But you kissed me back, and you can’t deny that you enjoyed it too,” I pointed out. Karina tried to brush me off her shoulders, but I tightened my grip on her so she couldn’t get away. We needed to talk about this. It wasn’t something that we could just shrug off.
We kissed and it happened. I wanted to see where things went with us, but with the wedding and Kat being gone, I didn’t know how that could be possible.
Knowing Kat, she would understand my point of view. If Kat didn’t like me, than what’s she got to say if I wanted to move on?
“Dexter, it was one single kiss,” Karina groaned. “You can’t still be thinking about one kiss.”
With an idea in mind, I grabbed Karina’s face gently in my hands and pulled her lips to mine. She tried to push me away, but soon melted into the kiss and accepted that it was bound to happen.
I wasn’t just imagining the sparks, they really were there and Karina must have felt them too.
We pulled apart, both slightly out of breath and I smiled knowingly at her. “There. That was two kisses. Do you want more for evidence or do you believe me that we can’t just let this thing between us go?”
Karina was speechless as she looked to the floor. Before we could say anymore on the subject, a loud banging noise sounded through the spacious hallway. Karina and I both followed the sound and saw the one person who we didn’t want to see: My mother.
In her over extravagant robes, she waltzed down the hall with Kat’s step mother in tow behind her. I tried to pull Karina behind me so that we could walk the other way to avoid her, but unfortunately, she had spotted us before we got the chance to bolt.
“Dexter, I’ve been looking for you! Where is Kathleen and Ella?” My mother called as she stalked forward as quickly as her high-heeled feet could manage.
I said nothing as my mother approached, but instead looked at Kat’s step mother, Veronica. She was a mess to say the least. Her dress was wrinkled, her eyes were red and puffy, and her curly hair was in all different directions. I knew by the look on her saddened face that she was upset about something to do with Ella. And now my mother was coming to blame me for it.
