New Light & Missing Time Two

DEXTER

“He sleeps funny. Look at the drool coming out of his mouth.”

“Ella, shush, he may hear you.”

“Can he hear what we are saying, Karina?”

“I’m not sure…”

Silence.

“Can I poke him?”

“Be my guest. He needs to up anyways.”

The weight on my bed suddenly shifted, and then the motion stopped.

Silence.

“DEXTER! WAKE UP!”

The sound of a little girl’s voice rang in my ears at I popped up from my comfortable sleeping position. I rubbed my eyes and look around my room, a little unsure if I was even awake.

“Ella! Do you know how dead we would be if we were caught in here? You could be a little quieter,” Karina scolded.

I rubbed my eyes again until my vision began to focus. The light was shining in my room, so obviously I slept in. I really needed the rest because last night, I really felt as if I was hit by a boulder.

“Sorry, Dexter,” Ella whispered while hopping from foot to foot nervously. Her white blonde curls were perfectly placed and she was wearing a pink dress with a matching bow. She was cute, but as payback for forcefully waking me up, I had just the plan.

“I’m afraid you’re breaking the rules, Ella. I’m going to have to call the guards to come and get you,” I ordered.

Ella covered her mouth in fear while Karina just crossed her arms at me, unimpressed.

“Well, somebody slept in when we had a very important plan to find the whereabouts of…” Karina trailed off and looked down at Ella hesitantly. “Um, that thing that we were looking for.”

I nodded my head in confirmation and when Karina’s statement sunk in, I practically bounded from my bed up to my feet. I had almost forgot that Karina and I had plans to find Kat this morning! I looked at the clock and it read 10 AM. I didn’t sleep in that late, but Karina and I were losing time. Kat could be farther away with ever second we waste.

Suddenly, I heard a giggle come from Ella. With a confused expression, I looked at Karina for answers, but she too was smiling and looking at me from head to toe.

“Well, Kat sure is a lucky girl, because you sure have nice pectorals,” Karina observed, while gesturing to my chest.

I looked down and came to the conclusion that I was shirtless. Feeling embarrassed, I grabbed the closest thing to me that was able to cover me up and turned my back to them to shield myself.

“Go wait outside, I’ll be ready in a sec,” I mumbled.

Karina and Ella laughed while walking out the door. Karina chimed, “You’re such a girl,” before sending me a wink and shutting the door behind her.

“Well, I’m kind of thankful that Kat’s step monster took Ella back into the palace for the rest of the morning. That way, we don’t have to think up a story for Kat’s disappearance,” Karina stated.

We were sitting across from each other in the palace study. It was more like a library and I rarely came in here anymore because I was always busy with palace duties. I actually loved to read in here when I was younger and I remember being dragged out by my parents because I had refused to leave the vicinity to have dinner. What can I say, I loved a good book.
