Lonely Walks & Change of Plans
KAT
We walked down the hall, with my arm in hers. I wanted to protest, to make a scene like normal, but I didn’t have the energy.
I just had the urge to vomit.
With a click to my heels and a drag in my step, Nora pulled me down the hallway to receive my fate. I didn’t say anything since we left my room and she didn’t say anything either. She just smiled and waved to the people passing by, as if life actually made sense at that very moment.
I knew now that I had only felt this sick and helpless when I witnessed my mother’s accident. My stomach was in the deepest pits of my body, my brain was thoughtless and I felt numb. I was getting married. I was pregnant. I was alone.
And Asshole Noel was never coming back.
I held back a sob and sighed deep within my chest. If I cried, it would rain and the devil would know that it was me who caused the rainstorm on her ‘perfect wedding’. I had to train myself to suffer in silence again, just like I used to when I thought about my mother. It was better that way and I had to remember that if I went through with this, Noel would be safe and alive and I would figure out a way to give this life inside of me an actually chance.
We made it to the Great Hall eventually. I was feeling faint, but I tried my best to pull myself together as Nora pulled me along until we were nose to nose with the large double doors. I heard a muffled crowd speaking on the other side and classical music being played in the background. I bet that I didn’t know a single one of those guests personally and for that I was grateful. They were just shadows in this horrible nightmare that I was having and it would be easier to look into their faces without breaking down. All I needed to do was to make it down the aisle in one piece. Left foot, right foot, left foot, right-
“Happy Wedding Day.”
I looked up to my speaker and scoffed. I hadn’t talked to the man in months, no wonder I didn’t recognize his voice.
“You don’t need to say anything Dad, you and I both know that you don’t really care about this wedding. What you really want is me off of your hands, right? Your emotional, bratty daughter out of your life? Well news flash, you already did that to moment you banged her.” I jabbed a shaky finger to the woman I was supposed to call my stepmother and scoffed again. Who knew I had such boldness? Huh. It must be the hidden anger and the stir crazy getting to me.
My father tensely closed his gaping mouth and shook his head in annoyance. “Now Kathleen, that is no way to talk to your-“
“My what? My mother? Father, that woman behind you is not my mother. My mother is under ground and not breathing because of a horrible mistake that happened. That woman behind you is also another horrible mistake.”
To smite me even more, my father dared to grab my step monster Veronica’s hand. His face was turning red and in embarrassment, he gestured for Nora to leave us alone to talk. Nora chipped about starting the ceremony in five minutes tops before leaving me to get eaten by the wolves. Also known as my so called father.
“Kathleen Andrews, you are getting married, why are you spoiling a celebration?”
How dare he. “You lost the right to call me Kathleen a long time ago. And celebration? More like legal proposal! I’m not going to stand here and argue with you because, really what good would that do? I’ve been doing it for ten years and it still hasn’t put a dent in your rock hard head. If you love me father, you would let me walk down this aisle alone and you would take your crazy teenage wife away from this wedding that you so easily agreed to.”
