Twisted Plans & Lockdown

DEXTER

Seeing Kat and my mother bicker to each other made it seem like Kat never left at all. Like Karina, Kat always hated to face my mother and I could never blame her. My mother always was out of line and never knew when you shouldn’t say certain things. She was the type of person that had ‘no filter.’

What I didn’t expect between their regular bickering was for Kat to just… give in. Kat never gave in when it came to a fight and when my mother whispered into her ear, Kat’s face drained of colour and became a lifeless mask.

Simply, my mother stepped back to let her pass and then Kat straightened out her dress and walked straight up to me. I didn’t know what my mother said, but it had to have been something bold if it had made Kat react like this.

“If you excuse me everyone, I’m going to… go freshen up a bit. I’m glad to be back and I’m here to stay,” Kat mumbled, her voice sounding flat.

Before I could stop her, Kat was already gone and jogging into the palace. I knew that something was wrong because the moment I heard Kat slam the door, the clouds above us started to form together and turn grey.

I looked at my mother, but all she wore was a smug smirk. She knew something and it must have had something to do with what she said to Kat.

“What game are you playing at?” I demanded and strode over to her. I had the intimidation advantage because I was taller than my mother, but her cold, smug eyes were just as effective.

“Dexter honey, I’m playing no game,” She scoffed coolly and crossed her arms over her chest.

“Then what the hell did you say to Kat to make her run off like that?”

My mother clasped her hands together and smacked her lips. The pause that she was creating didn’t help at all and her expression told me that she could really careless what I thought.

“Well,” She started. “Your father and I have been talking and since your coronation last week, we decided that it would be best for you to have a bride after all. We don’t want you to grow up on your own and well, Kathleen is back now, so talk about fate! Simply, the wedding can be back on now as planned.”

I stared at the stranger in front of me, completely dumbfounded. She had to be joking! All of the words that she was saying had to be some form of foreign language or lies. My mother hated Kat! From the moment that I chose her to be my fiancée, my mother had been against my choices and tried to convince me to choose someone else. I would have never guessed that the exact same woman would put the wedding back on and call Kat returning home ‘Fate’. There had to be some sort of catch.

“You must be joking,” I managed to muster.

She smiled at me, her red lips mocking. “Oh no, son. This is no joke. We have been talking about it for awhile that if Kathleen ever returned, we would make our previous plans of your marriage go back on track. Isn’t marrying Kathleen what you wanted?”

I shook my head, still completely in shock. Karina was still standing beside me and she too was speechless. I mean, I was happy with her now, and my mother had to come in and be the dictator? I was crowned king last week! She couldn’t do that to me, not anymore.

“Well, I’m the king now,” I stated. “So you can’t simply order me by telling me who I can and can’t marry.”

My mother thought for a moment. “That’s true, but Dexter, would you prefer to have blood on your hands than have this choice in marriage?”
