A few hours later, after the crew of the Enterprise had successfully managed to stop the volcano from erupting, and had gotten Spock back on board unharmed, the Captain finally allowed himself to leave the bridge and head to the med bay. By then, the entire crew had heard what had happened between the Captain and the Ensign. Kirk slowly walked to the med bay, anxious to see his friend, but attempting to give off a professional attitude about being reunited. The doors slid open to admit him, and he strolled over to the only occupied bed, where his friend lay, still asleep. The two nurses stared in awe as he approached her side. Bones exited his office to observe the situation. He brought a chair over to the Captain before retreating to the side of the room. He glared at the nurses, and they immediately returned to their duties, yet still listening. Kirk sat down beside his friend, taking one of her hands in his. He gazed over her appearance, taking in her tangled black hair, the remnants of the scratches on her face from running through the trees, and her broken nails from clawing through her kit. He lifted her hand to his lips, pressing her fingers against them gently.

"Marie...I'm so sorry"

Her long eyelashes fluttered, and she began to open her eyes. Her dark grey eyes were tired, and still full of fear. She glanced around quickly and coughed, reaching for her throat.

"Breathe, Marie. Relax. You're not underwater, you're in the med bay. It's okay, you're safe"

"James, the volcano"

The Captain laughed.

"You almost drowned. Marie, you almost died, and the first thing you think of when you wake up is the mission?"

"Did we succeed? The aliens, the planet, it survived, right?"

"Yes, Marie. It did. But that's not why I'm here. I didn't come for a debrief"

"Oh. I'm sorry, James. What is it then?"

"I came here to tell you that what you did was stupid and irresponsible"

"I know, stealing the scroll and running straight into the crowd, that was-"

"Wrong again. I meant giving me the respirator"

"You're the Captain. It was important that you make it back to the Enterprise"

"I would have been so mad if you had died for me, Marie"

"That's my place, James. You are my Captain. I serve at your pleasure"

James sighed, standing up.

"Get some rest, Marie. I'll speak with you later"

"Okay, James"

The Captain exited the med bay, and Bones approached the Ensign.

"Welcome back, sleeping beauty"

"Doctor, I'm sorry, I-"

"Ensign, relax. You're the most interesting case I've had this entire mission. I appreciated the distraction"

"Anytime, sir"

"You blew Kirk off just now, you know"

"What?"

"He was trying to express gratitude, and his feelings for you. You ignored it"

"People were listening, I was trying to be professional and save both our reputations"

"That was not the time for that. He wants to be more familiar with you, I could see it in his eyes. For a man, what he expressed just now was a lot"
