Marie tried to pull her arm away from Bones. She had a feeling like she needed to be near John. She couldn't explain it, she knew he wasn't a very nice person. For goodness sake, he had killed Admiral Pike! And he had wounded her too, indirectly of course. His damage to the meeting room caused the gash on her arm. But he had been so sweet to her. Bones pulled Marie back and took her out of the room. He pushed her against a wall outside the doors of the brig and held her there by her shoulders.
"That man loves you. You may be too ignorant to notice it but he does. And I want the honest truth right now Stanton, do you love him back?"
"What? Why would he love me? I've known him for like a day, and he killed the admiral! I can't say I love him, no, but he has been considerably kind to me and I like him for that"
"I'm pleased to hear that"
Bones let Marie off the wall and she rubbed her shoulders.
"Sorry. He's a criminal, Marie. He isn't safe. He's in prison, he can't provide for you, it would never work"
"Didn't I just say I don't love him?"
The door behind them opened and Spock stuck his head into the hallway.
"Captain Kirk requests your presence, Doctor. You too Ensign"
Marie and Bones walked into the room together and back over to Harrison's cell. Captain Kirk dismissed the security officer working in the room.
"John Harrison. I have a couple questions for you. First off, about my friend here"
The captain grabbed Marie by her already sore shoulders, causing her to wince as he shoved her in front of him.
"Captain, she's in pain. Don't touch her"
"Yeah, Harrison? So what if I do?"
Kirk squeezed Marie's shoulders harder and she whimpered.
"You're abusing your crew, Captain, what kind of leader does that?"
"The same captain who does this"
Kirk gripped Marie's shoulders even harder, digging his fingers into her flesh. Marie cried out and tried to get away before stifling a sob.
"LET HER GO!"
Harrison slammed his hands against the glass separating him from the crying girl and her captain. Kirk smirked and tossed Marie aside. She fell lightly to the ground and nobody moved.
"Why do you care what I do to her?"
"I have no family. Not anymore. And everyone needs someone to care for. Clearly you don't care for her. Someone has to"
Kirk glanced at his lifelong friend sitting on the floor, curled against a security console clutching her injured shoulders. He turned his attention back to the man before him.
"No family? Why? Does it have to do with what you did to the secret branch of Starfleet?"
"It has everything to do with that"
"Tell me right now"
"Captain, when your Admiral found me, I was frozen. I had originally been created, genetically engineered, to be a superior race, able to surpass humans in every aspect. I was not the only one. My crew, my family, we were all alike. We were all frozen, convicted for war crimes we did not commit. I want to get them back, Captain, and is there anything you would not do for your family?"
A tear dripped down Harrison's face from his striking eyes down his beautiful cheekbones. Marie, who had been watching the scene unfold, couldn't take it any longer. She stood and ran, pressing herself against the glass of Harrison's cell.
"Please don't cry, John. It will be ok"
Kirk hauled her back, intending to carry on his conversation with Harrison.
"Where is your family now. Why have you decided to adopt that Ensign to care for?"
"Like I said before. Everyone needs to care for someone, and everyone needs to be cared for. Marie has nobody to watch her, and I need someone to watch. As for my family, they are on board your ship right now. All 72 members"
Kirk thought for a moment.
"The torpedoes. What kind of fuel source do they have?"
"Open one up and find out, Captain"
Kirk turned on his heel and left the room followed by Spock, and eventually Bones, leaving Marie standing a few feet from the glass cell. She stepped forward and put her hand on the glass. Harrison raised his hand and placed it on her hand on his side of the glass. Marie could feel the warmth from his skin through the thick glass.
"I'm sorry for what Kirk has done to you, John"
"It's ok. How are your shoulders?"
"They hurt badly. The doctor shoved me against a wall by them outside, they were already sore when Kirk decided to use me against you"
"I'm so sorry, Marie"
"John, I...I don't understand something"
"Yes Marie?"
"I don't understand your feelings for me. I don't understand my feelings for you. What I do understand is that I feel connected to you. And I want to hug you more than anything in the world right now"
Before John could say anything, Marie darted to the security console and used her codes to form a door in the glass. She ran to the hole and jumped through into John's cell and threw herself into his arms. He caught her and held her for a few long moments, but quick as the moment came, John placed her outside the cell and Marie closed the hole back up. She knelt in front of the glass and John did the same, their hands still pressed against the glass.
"Marie, I promise I will do my best to never let them hurt you again"
"I'll get you out of there John. Everything will be ok"
