Marie raced to the bridge.

"James! Stop him!"

"Marie, I'm trying, I'm not a miracle worker. His ship is powerful, ours just doesn't match"

"He's damaged, get him down! Make it so bad he has to come over here"

"I'm starting to think you have a personal problem with him"

"I do! He broke my heart James, I want revenge"

James Kirk pulled Marie into a tight hug.

"You'll be ok Marie, I promise"

Just then the Enterprise bounced and stopped.

"Captain!"

"Chekov, what happened?"

"Khan knocked the warp core out of alignment. We are dead in the water sir. Sitting ducks!"

"I'm on my way"

James grabbed Marie's hand and together they ran to engineering. Kirk approached the doors leading to the warp core. He reached for the handle and entered the code. Scotty rushed over.

"Captain! You can't make the climb, the radiation is still in there!"

"Someone has to go. Might as well be me"

Marie threw herself at Kirk, and he grabbed her face forcefully, kissing her with a passion.

"I love you Marie, you will always be the girl I truly loved"

Marie started to cry.

"James, please, don't go"

"Be strong, for me"

James gave her one last hug and threw open the door, locking it behind him once he entered. Marie watched him go before falling to the floor crying. Scotty walked away to deal with the impending destruction of his ship. Chekov knelt on the ground beside Marie.

"Miss, I know we don't know each other well, but would you like me to hold you?"

Marie nodded with her face in her hands, and Chekov gathered her into his arms, her head against his chest while he rubbed her back. The ship had begun to destabilize from the unaligned warp core and it started to tilt. People and objects were sliding everywhere. Chekov and Marie strapped themselves into chairs in engineering and waited silently. Eventually, the ship went right side up again. They returned to sitting by the radiation doors and waiting. Soon after, Kirk dragged himself up to the door. His eyes were red and he couldn't breathe well, he was forcing himself to stay alive. Marie tried to open the door but Scotty ran up and grabbed her arms, pinning them behind her back.

"You can't let him out, the whole room will flood with radiation"

Marie dropped back to her knees with a sob, pressing her hands against the glass.

"James, are you ok?"

"Marie, I'm scared"

"I know, I am too"

"I don't want to die"

"Nobody wants to die, nobody wants to lose you either"

"Marie you have to be strong once I'm gone"

"You're my best friend, and I love you. I can't go on without you"

"You have to try. You have plenty of people to care for you"

"Khan left me. You're leaving now too"

"Not by choice! Marie I would stay around to comfort you until the day we die if I could, but I had to save my ship and my crew. I had to save you"

Kirk groaned and pressed his hand to the glass, against Marie's hand.

"I'll miss you so much"

"I'll miss you too, Marie"

Tears fell from both of their eyes, but their gazes never left each other. The childhood friends that had grown into adults finally saying goodbye to their lifelong companion. Eventually, the light left Kirk's eyes and his hands fell from the glass door. Marie sat silently and looked on at her best friend's dead body. Chekov placed an arm around her, soothing her gently. Marie stood up and turned around.

"I'm going to kill Khan"
