Marie was walking down the street away from Kirk's apartment. She couldn't get used to calling it their apartment just yet. She was heading towards a cafe to get a coffee. Kirk had broken their coffee machine on accident while trying to fix it. Originally, it had only needed a new filter, but even though Marie had insisted she didn't need coffee that badly, Kirk insisted on fixing it and destroyed the entire thing. He was on his way to buy a new one and she was going to buy coffee. The last thing Marie remembered was a shrill beep of an approaching speeder and someone's hands on her arms. When she woke up, she lay in a hospital bed.
"I am so sick of waking up in these beds! I need a new job"
"Marie, darling, you weren't even hurt on the job. You were walking"
"Oh yeah"
Marie looked around. Kirk was sitting on her left, next to Chekov.
"Chekov? What are you doing here?"
"What, friends can't visit friends in the hospital?"
"Well, they can, but-"
"Are you saying we aren't friends?"
"No! But-"
"Relax, I'm messing with you. I'm here cause I pulled you out of the way. Tried to at least"
"You'd be dead if it wasn't for him"
Marie smiled warmly at Chekov.
"Thank you"
Just then, Bones stuck his head in the door.
"Good morning Ensign. Jim, I need to talk to you"
"Well go ahead"
"In the hallway..."
Kirks looked concerned. He leaned over and kissed Marie on the cheek.
"I'll be right back love. Keep an eye on her Chekov"
"Aye, Captain"
Kirk followed Bones out of the room and Marie turned to Chekov.
"Who hit me?"
"The vehicle got away and it was unmarked. They haven't found them yet"
"It's just so odd, it's a nice day, there's no rain or fog. I was walking on the opposite side that the ship would have come from too, it doesn't make sense"
"That's what we thought too"
"What do you mean?"
"Well, it's almost like someone was trying to-"
"Chekov!"
Kirk walked back into the room.
"What are you two talking about?"
Chekov looked flustered.
"How long Marie has been out for!"
"Oh, not very long honey. You weren't hurt too badly, a few broken ribs and you bumped your head on the ground"
"That's...good"
Kirk smiled and took Marie's hand.
"They are doing everything they can to find who hit you"
"Good. I never got my coffee"
Bones walked in just then.
"Kirk and Chekov will get you some, I need to do a quick examination"
The two men left the room. Bones sat on the edge of the bed.
"Just kidding. I only wanted to talk about the accident. Did you see a face?"
"No, I didn't even see the ship"
"Did anything around you seem suspicious?"
"No, why?"
"Well...Starfleet has reason to believe it wasn't an accident"
"Someone tried to kill me on purpose?"
"They think it relates to Khan. Someone is mad at him and knows you two were close so they want to punish you because they can't get him"
Kirk walked back in with Chekov in tow.
"James, is it true? Someone is trying to kill me?"
"Bones we weren't going to tell her yet!"
"She's better off knowing, she can keep herself safe"
"I don't want to die!"
"You won't, someone will be with you at all times from now on. You'll be safe and sound"
Marie lay back on her bed. Who would have thought that almost a year after Khan had disappeared from her life he would still be coming back to haunt her?
