Marie stood up to leave after a while, and John stood with her.
"I need to get back to the med bay"
"I understand"
"I will come back and visit you, I promise"
John smiled, and Marie left the room. She walked to the med bay, and when she got there the only other person in the room was Bones. They worked in silence for a long time before a comms channel opened to the med bay.
"Doctor, I need you to meet Ensign Wallace in the shuttle bay, and Ensign Stanton I need you on the bridge"
"Aye sir"
Marie and Bones closed up the med bay and walked in separate directions. Marie walked onto the bridge and directly over to the captain.
"Ensign. In my ready room"
Marie followed Kirk into his private office area off of the bridge. As soon as the doors closed behind him he grabbed Marie by the upper arms and pulled her to him, kissing her deeply. Marie was too shocked to react at first, but when she realized what was going on, she pushed herself away.
"James! What are you doing?"
"Marie I'm sorry for how I've treated you. I hurt you and I've ignored you and I've given you every reason to go for Harrison, but I want you to know that I love you. I've loved you since we were little and I wanted to marry you. I can't make you choose me, but I can't let you choose him. He's a criminal and just because he fixed a little cut on your head doesn't mean you need to stay with him"
"James it isn't like that. I can't explain how I feel about him. All I can say is that I feel a connection. I can't watch you hurt him and I refuse to stand by and do nothing"
"You never loved me, did you?"
"I did James, I loved you at the academy but you were off with any girl you could get your hands on and I figured I either didn't matter at all or I mattered as much as one of them. I don't want to be someone in a long line"
"I don't feel the same way about you as I did about them! Marie I'm so sorry, please, forgive me"
"I forgive you. But I can't just bring those feelings back. It would take time and frankly we don't have time. I'm attached to John somehow and I can't abandon him. I'm sorry James. You'll always be my friend"
"Marie..."
"No, James. I'm sorry"
Marie turned to walk out of the room, and James followed her.
"Stay on the bridge for right now. We are going to have Carol and Bones open a torpedo"
"Why those two?"
"Bones is a surgeon, he has steady hands. Carol specializes in advanced weaponry"
Marie nodded and took a seat off to the side of the bridge. On the view screen she saw a lone torpedo on the surface of a grey planet, near a small shuttle. Bones and Carol were leaning over the weapon, studying the circuitry. Carol knelt down and started explaining to Bones which wires he had to cut, and he stuck his arm inside and went to work. Suddenly, the panel covering the wires shot closed and Bones had his arm trapped. Carol began trying to diffuse the bomb, and everyone on the bridge went to red alert.
"Sulu, beam them out of there!"
"The scanners can't differentiate between the doctor and the missile, Captain"
Bones kept trying to pull his arm out.
"Kirk you get this girl off this planet right now"
"No!"
Carol furiously worked on the controls of the torpedo.
"If you take me out now we have no chance of saving him. Let me do this!"
Sulu checked the countdown to detonation splayed on the screen.
"Ten seconds Captain"
Carol groaned and ripped an entire circuit panel out of the inside of the missile. The door holding Bones opened and he pulled his arm free just as an outer covering slid to the side on the top of the bomb. The two officers peered over and looked inside.
"Captain...beam us up"
Minutes later Kirk stormed into the brig, followed by Bones, Spock and Marie.
"Why is there a man in that torpedo?"
"There are men and women in all 72 of them, Captain. They are my family. My crew. I built those bombs, and Admiral Marcus had me put them there as a punishment. That's why I blew up the archives. To save them"
"Who are you?"
"My name is Khan"
Kirk stormed out of the brig followed by Spock and Bones. Again, Marie and Harrison were left alone.
"Who is John Harrison?"
"A creation of Admiral Marcus"
"I will call you by your real name now"
Marie turned away slightly.
"What's wrong, love?"
"Kirk...kissed me"
"What?"
"He told me not to fall for you and that he's always loved me"
"Do you love him back?"
"No, I...I think I love you"
Marie reached up and slid a metal circle down to Khan's face height in the glass. She spread it open with her hands and it made a hole in the glass. It was used to pass food and supplies to prisoners, but now served a much better purpose for the separated lovers. Marie stood on her tiptoes as a Khan reached through the glass and grasped her face, pulling her to him and kissing her with all the built up emotion he had. Suddenly the door opened and Bones came in. Khan and Marie broke apart quickly before Bones saw them and Marie made the circle smaller and moved it lower.
"Ensign? What are you doing in here?"
"I came to collect a blood sample. If he's who he says he is, he must have powerful cells"
Marie pulled a contraption out of her pocket and held it up.
"Arm please"
Khan reached through the small hole after rolling up his sleeve. Marie pushed the needle into his skin and drew out a tube of blood. When it was full, Marie slid the hole back out of reach and closed it. Then she left the room with Bones, throwing a fleeting glance over her shoulder at Khan, who was smiling.
