Viv

Everything is in chaos.

I can't find Winnie, Louis is passed out after a major panic attack, Scarlett is crying and she never cries, and now Lauren and Josh are shouting over each other in panic.

"STOP!" i screamed, which made everyone fall silent. Scarlett looked up with bloodshot eyes, not even bothering to wipe her wet cheeks. She looked over to Louis' body on the bed, biting her lip and lost in thought.

I turn my gaze away from her and back to Lauren and Josh. They were covered in dirt, like the tripped countless times on their way back here, and their game bag was empty, lightly bumping against Josh's thigh.

Lauren's green eyes are wide with panic, one I've only seen when she was faced with a Grayie. She opens her mouth, but she stays silent, no words being able to form. I raise an eyebrow at her stricken state and slowly move over to Josh.

"Okay, have you also lost the ability to use words too?" I say impatiently.

"Out- in the forest- animals- we couldn't- but then we found- disgusting- something big- I-" Josh stuttered maniacally, waving his hands uncontrollably and slightly trembling.

"Oh dear lord, spit it out!"

"WE WENT TO HUNT, BUT ALL THE ANIMALS ARE DEAD AND ROTTING IN A HUGE PILE OF HORRYFYING GORE AND I AM PRETTY SCARRED FOR LIFE AND THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL THAT IT WAS NATURAL BUT THEN AGAIN WHAT IS NOW A DAYS BUT HOLY SHIT YOU HAVE TO SEE IT." Lauren screamed, making me jump and Scarlett turn to her in shock.

Pile of dead animals?

"What do you mean by 'pile?'" I ask cautiously, taking a step back from Lauren who was now panting heavily, her eyes still wide with fear.

"As in a huge fucking pile about the height of Carrie." Josh deadpanned.

My own eyes widened, exchanging a glance with Scarlett who looked terrified.

"Show me."

Scarlett

When they said Pile, they were mistaken.

A pile, is a load of dirty laundry after a mission.

This monstrosity, this mountain of carcasses was way beyond 'pile'.

My jaw dropped, but due to the unbearable stench I quickly closed it again, plugging my nose and trying to keep myself from gagging.

"What the hell?" Viv whispered, her eyes watering too from the stench, or maybe from the horrifying sight of the entire forest, dead a few feet away.

"What could've caused this?" My voice sounds nasally, but I hardly find it funny. Not with a sight like this before me.

"We don't know. We saw it, threw up a little, and ran back to the house." Josh explained, comfortingly holding Lauren tightly to his side. Her short brown hair hid her face as she dug it into his shoulder. If I listened closely I could hear her soft whimpers.

I walk around the animals carefully, swatting the flies building up around the Pile. The weirdest thing about it, was that each animal looked about  4 or 5 days dead. Which meant that each and every animal ever in the forest, died at the same time.

"What. The. Hell?" Viv says again, louder this time. The view of the Pile must finally be sinking in. She snapped her head to me, her dark hair whipping across her neck. She said nothing as she carefully examined me, thoughts probably racing through her mind.

I felt a headache coming on. Too much was happening. First Louis, with his freak panic attack and now this.

I should be inside with Louis right now, I should be the first face he wakes up to.

Like before, before all this shit happened.

"Josh, take Lauren back to the mansion. Tell Robin to start rationing the meat and saving it. We might need it." I almost retch, my mouth open for too long. Josh nods, speaking words of encouragement in a hushed tone to Lauren as he led her back.

"I don't what to be more worried about. The fact that we just lost a major food supply, or the sinking feeling in my gut that whatever caused this isn't satisfied." Viv gulped, her hands shaking.

I just about rounded the Pile when a notice something shoved between a squirrel and the detattached head of a deer.

"Oh, I am so going to regret this." I mutter, rolling up my sleeve.

Viv granted me a questioning look, before realizing what I was doing and turning a lovely shade of green.

"Oh God that's gross." She gagged, turning away as I stuck my hand between the folds of flesh. I tried not to think about the rotting meat and crusty blood as my hand sunk further into the Pile.

I'm just about to yank my hand out and run home screaming when I finally feel what I'm looking for.

I tug the unusual object, noticing its soft and threaded. The piece of fabric let out a sickening sound as it slid out, covered in patches of blood and something brown that I don't want to think about.

"What is it?" Viv let out in a pained voice, wincing as the soiled cloth thumped to the ground. She followed to where I was, careful not to step on anything, and crouched beside me.

The cloth was a heavy blanket, tattered at the ends and falling apart. You usually saw it on homeless people, because they were given out at the local shelter a few blocks from here.

I grabbed a near by rock to scrap off some of what I decided to call "the Substance" and let out a small gasp in surprise at the words underneath.

"What the-"

"Hell?" I finished, cutting off Viv.

There on the blanket, scrawled in blood, was a message.

'We See You. We're Coming. And We're Taking It For Ourselves."
