Winnie
The car ride home was silent. No one felt like speaking, and for once in her life Carrie couldn't hold her spear. She didn't want anything to do with it.
Maybe because Penny was the first Grayie that Carrie regretted to have killed.
That's how it eventually worked out. Penny was too far gone to save, and Carrie felt the need to do it herself. She had found Penny in the first place, she had comforted her first.
So she had to take care of her, even if that meant putting a spear through her brain.
Scar drove back with Niall in the Impala, I couldn't really confront him right now. I took over the wheel in the Volkswagon. Carrie was in a daze and Josh was quiet, looking out his window. I didn't know what they were thinking, but it couldn't have compared to my own racing mind.
So they did this?
They killed an innocent girl, to deliver a message? The same message we found iinbetween a pile of dead animals nonetheless.
Who the fuck were these people? I knew that I had to get back to Viv quick and tell her, maybe try to work out some plan. Obviously our shelter was in danger, these sickos were threatening to take it from us.
To hurt more people for it.
I don't know if this group has weapons, but I do know that they're a threat to us, and to the mansion.
"Win?" I was snapped out of my thoughts by Josh's meek voice.
"Hmm?"
"We have to do something. I thought Grayies were the only monsters in this world but I was wrong. So wrong." His voice cracked at the end, and I could hear his heavy breathing as he tried to calm himself.
I paused, taking in his words. I knew that we had to move eventually anyway, the fence surrounding the mansion wasn't going to hold forever.
Whoever these people were however, didn't know that.
"We need to get Viv. She's checking the water supply, but I doubt they would've tainted that somehow. It's the only water source in a 5 mile radius." I felt so frustrated. Viv and I, we were the protectors of this group. We had to keep them safe and now I could sense the doubt in Josh's eyes.
"If they hadn't gotten to her already." Carrie muttered. My heart clenched at the thought, and I couldn't breathe for a moment.
"Carrie..." I tried to keep my voice even, "Why would you say that?"
"Isn't it obvious?" Carrie's icy pale eyes locked on mine.
When I didn't answer she chuckled humorlessly. Now Josh was paying attention as well, carefully scooting closer so he could face Carrie directly.
"Those people," Carrie started, her voice was soft, "knew that we were going to be at Wal-Mart. They knew that our most strongest defenders were going to be scrounging for food."
I was listening to Carrie. All the air was escaping my lungs as I realized what Carrie was saying.
My God, why hadn't I put the pieces together before?
"You don't think..." Josh's face was pale, and his dark eyes were wide in fear.
My foot instinctively pressed harder on the foot pedal. My hands gripped the wheel tightly, my scarred knuckles turning a fierce white.
My voice was surprisingly strong as I said the next words.
"They're going to attack the group."
