Viv

"Stay behind me." My voice was low as I stood up from the steep climb. Liam was following close behind, brushing his jeans out and shakily clutching his gun.

"It could have just been a Grayie." Liam murmured. I didn't have to see his face to know he was scared. I didn't blame him, I was always scared. Ever since all this happened I've been scared.

"I would have known. Jared would've cracked some stupid joke."

I had my gun in my outstretched hands, my grip with a surgeon-like steadiness. My worn out sneakers molded to the earth's every curve, every step was silent. There was the other possibility if Jared hadn't answered after the shot. Liam knew this possibility but I'm guessing, like me, he didn't want to think about it. The possibility that Jared's bullet was no use, and he was gone.

I shuddered, I didn't want to even consider it. Besides, I didn't hear the sickening crunching of bone if it was a Grayie that got to him.

I don't know if that's a relief or something to be scared of.

Past the bushes and low-hanging trees, I could hear the rush of water to my left. I stepped into a clearing. The grass here was long and wild, still striving with life. I felt envious in a way, their lives continued uninterrupted, while ours crumbled.

"Jared? Jack?" I called softly, my gun still raised high. This was where we were going to test the water, it was the base that anyone could reach to possibly poison the stream. No one was in sight.

"Viv...?" Liam was off to the side, I didn't even hear him move from behind me. He was crouching, his gun on the ground beside him, carelessly put where anyone could reach for it and kill him. I would scold him right now, but the way he seemed to have forgotten the gun must mean that something much more important has caught his attention.

"What is it?"

"I think we're in some serious shit." Liam stood up, dragging an empty duffel by the handle. There was something smeared on the surface, and I could feel my heart sink when I realized that it was the same duffel that Jack had brought, originally filled with equipment.

"Oh god." My hand was instantly clamped on my mouth stopping a sob from escaping. The words scrawled in blood came to focus. The blood was fresh, and unlike the black rotting blood of a Grayie, this was red, still wet to the touch.

"Have you seen these words before?" Liam questioned, and I remember that we never told anyone about the Pile. We simply gave everyone an excuse, we couldn't start a panic. Tears are forming and I know right now I should be running and running fast, but I can't move. I'm paralyzed.

Because the writing was familiar, but the words have most definitely changed. I could only manage to shake my head and croak the words aloud.

"We see you. We're here. And now it's Ours."

Winnie

"Fuck!" I cursed, slamming on the brakes as my body flew forward, only to be stopped by the seatbelt. The car let out an earpiercing screech and I heard a slight thump. Then a cry of pain.

"Shit, Winnie!" Josh growled, holding his now bleeding nose. He rocked forward too hard and his face kissed the dashboard. Blood dripped onto the curve of his upper lip and he tried to lean back.

"No time!" I rushed, ripping off my belt and running out of the car. Carrie quickly followed me, gripping her spear tightly, a crowbar stuffed into the band of her jeans. My own gun was in my hand, the familiar weight of it no longer comforting. We arrived at the mansion but there was no time to waste. If Carrie was right, these people were planning an attack. Or worse.
