THINGS HAVE BEEN HARD for Steve ever since he saw Bucky for the first time in almost seventy years, and it never got any easier thanks to Tony and Natasha bringing up S.H.I.E.L.D's hunt for him. Steve doesn't agree with having to hunt down his best friend, not even after everything he has done when HYDRA was brainwashing him for all those years.

Steve has the feeling that his best friend is still out there, just waiting to be found. He just doesn't know the state that his friend is in after a year of not being seen at all. He needs to find his friend before S.H.I.E.L.D and before HYDRA takes his friend back and brainwashes him again. That's the thought that has kept Steve going for the past year.

Find Bucky before anyone else can take him and make him into something he isn't. Bucky isn't a monster. Bucky isn't a freak. Bucky isn't naturally an assassin. Bucky isn't naturally a murderer. Bucky is just a friend who hasn't been in control of his own body for too long. Bucky is a lover, not a fighter. Bucky is someone who needs to be saved. Bucky is human, and has been forced into things he didn't get a say about.

Steve just doesn't know how soon he is going to actually find Bucky, or how soon Bucky is going to find him.

Bucky didn't know what he was doing after he left Steve on that beach just over a year ago. He hid in alleyways and managed to find enough money laying on the walkways to get himself one meal a day, and barely survive on that. His body eventually got used to it though, even though he was almost wasting away from malnutrition and no self-care.

The brunet has been keeping a lookout for the familiar blond man, and has caught a flash of here and there, but nothing that gives the brunet any idea where he can find the man. The day is coming where Bucky will finally find the man he has been searching for ever since he went to the Smithsonian and remembered some of who he really is, and who Steve is to him.

The thing is, Bucky hasn't stopped remembering short flashes of his life before HYDRA; his life before the war; his life with Steve. There are just some things that brainwashing can't fully erase; like the feelings Bucky had for the blond - the feelings that were illegal back then, but are now accepted more than ever before; the feelings he can't stop from filling his mind whenever he thinks about Steve.

Those flashes and those feelings have been pushing Bucky further and further to becoming someone who is similar to who he originally was; someone who protected the blond, someone who had a family, someone who was loved, and someone who loved. They have also pushed him to try harder to find Steve, and he knows that he is getting closer every day to finding him.

Bucky doesn't know how soon the day is going to come that he finally finds Steve, and it is going to be a day that even HYDRA can't erase.

STEVE WAS IN THE shower when someone started banging on his front door. He senses the urgency behind the banging and quickly jumps out of the shower, pulling on his old pair of tattered jeans before running down the, thankfully, carpeted stairs to the front door. He flings the door open and his eyes go wider than he thought possible, at the sight of the one person he never truly thought he'd ever see again.

"Bucky?" Steve asks quietly, afraid that his friend would run at any loud noise because of how skittish he seems.

The brunet looks up at Steve with a little smile. "Hey, Steve."

"How did you know where I was?"

"I asked around. The homeless people around here are quite kind, even if you're a murderer."

     "Dammit, Buck. Get inside."

     "Yeah. Okay."

Steve steps to the side and gives Bucky some space to get inside. Bucky looks around outside before hurrying into the apartment. Steve closes the door behind the brunette and follows him into the kitchen, where he finds the latter rummaging through his cupboards for food. Steve watches in wonder as his friend grabs out everything he needs and then go to the freezer to get out some frozen meat.

Bucky looks over at the watchful blond and gives him a small grin, his teeth barely showing but making the blond relax slightly. He watches as the blond heads back up the stairs to do something, and it is then that Bucky hears water running. Bucky chuckles when he realizes that he must have interrupted Steve while he was having a shower. He then goes silent when unneeded images fly into his mind.

"Dammit, Bucky," Bucky mutters under his breath. "Quit thinking about him like that. He's your best friend; not some guy you saw on the street or something. He doesn't feel the same way. Stupid Bucky."

"Buck?" Steve asks, frowning at the smaller male. "What are you muttering about?"

"Huh? Oh, nothing. Just stuff that isn't important."

"You do know that I don't believe you right?"

     "Yeah, I know."

"Then, don't lie to me. Tell me the truth, Buck."

     "You'll hate me."

     "I could never hate you."

"This time you will. I know you will."

Steve walks straight over to the adamant brunet and pulls the latter to himself. Their lips meet and Bucky's eyes widen. Steve rests his hands on Bucky's hips and the latter closes his eyes, starting to move his lips with Steve's. Steve smiles into the kiss as Bucky wraps his arms around the blonde's neck and presses his body against his friend's, removing any remaining space between them. Steve taps the back of Bucky's thighs and the latter jumps, Steve grabbing his thighs and lifting him onto the table so they were the same height.

Breathing becomes hard for Bucky soon after, so he pulls away, putting his forehead on Steve's and breathing rapidly, his eyes still closed. Steve shifts his stance between Bucky's legs and tries to steady his breathing, keeping his hands on Bucky's hips and his eyes closed. Their breaths mix and they feel more happy than they have ever felt before because they finally know how the other feels about them - something they never expected to know, but now they do. That's never going to change.
