“You two are having a baby?” Ethan asked in astonishment.
“I-uh…um…I-” I stuttered. Mom put a hand on my shoulder as I stared at the word pregnant.
“Guys? They need to talk.” Mom said. I heard the shuffling of feet and I looked up to see Nolan standing in the doorway, opening and closing his mouth like a fish.
“Nolan?” I asked in a small voice.
“P-p-pregnant? Y-you’re pregnant? We’re having a baby…c-cuz you’re…pregnant?” He kept repeating, as if he was in some sort of trance.
“Nolan.” I said in a louder voice.
“I’m gonna be a father…and you’re gonna be a mother…cuz we’re having a baby.” He said, as if he was trying to figure something out.
“Nolan!” I practically shouted.
“Huh?”
“We need to talk about this.” I said, looking up at him.
“H-how did this happen?” He asked, dropping to his knees.
“Really? You need ‘the talk’? Well, when a man and a woman love each other very much, they give one another a ‘special hug’.” I said sarcastically.
“I know that. I thought you were on the pill.”
“I am! You know those things aren’t 100% effective.” I snapped.
“I was just wondering, geez!” he snapped back. We glared at each other for a few moments before I closed my eyes and sighed.
“What are we doing? Why are we getting so mad at each other?” I asked.
”I have no clue, but we can’t fight.” He sighed and I crawled into his lap.“What are we going to do? We can’t afford this baby…I hate to say this, but I think we’re going to have to live here for a while.” I said.
“I guess you’re right….” The door bust open and in an instant, mom wrapped me in a hug, rocked me back and forth, all the while petting my hair and saying how excited she was to have us staying here.
“Uh...I hate to break up the reunion, but where’s Izzy?” Nolan asked, clearing his throat, still looking a little dazed.
“She’s with Madison and Nate.” Mom said, referring to Izzy’s best friends.
“Okay…Dad? Can I talk to you?” I asked. He nodded and I walked outside.
“How are you doing, Reagan?” He asked genuinely.
“I’m…freaking out.” I told him honestly.
“Why?”
“I just…I swear I took the pill everyday, I don’t remember ever forgetting.” I said, sitting down on the outdoor furniture.
“You had strep throat l few weeks ago, right?” He asked and I nodded. “And you were on antibiotics, correct?”
“Yeah….” I trailed off, unsure of what he was getting at.
“Some antibiotics can counteract birth control pills.” He said and I sighed. “I’m quite excited about having a grandbaby.” He said, grinning widely and I smiled, thinking of all the people that will love on this baby. I stroked my stomach, and looked up to see mom standing in front of me, she sat down and smiled at me.
“How are you doing, Reagan?”
”Better, I’m still freaked, but I’m kind of excited.” I admitted,“So am I, It will be great to have a baby around the house again. And I’m sure you’ll be a wonderful mother, its Nolan I’m worried about.” She said. The thought of Nolan freaking out about every little thing made me chuckle. “So, we need to make you an appointment and get you pre-natal vitamins.” She said, standing up with a huge grin on her face.
