“I know you’re staring at me.” I mumbled sleepily the next morning.
“How do you know…I thought you were sleeping?”
“I’m a magical unicorn with magical powers.” I mumbled again and he burst out laughing.
“Do you even realize what you’re saying?” He asked and I buried my face in my pillow.
“Shh. My pillow is trying to sleep.”
He chuckled and kissed my forehead. “I’ll let you sleep.”
“Fanks.” I said, my voice muffled by my pillow. “Wait, what time is it?” I said, rubbing my eyes.
He looked at his phone. “It’s almost noon.” He said and I groaned.
“Why do I keep sleeping in so late?”
“Because you’re tired.” He state and I rolled over so that I was lying on my back. “What do you want to do today?”
“I might have forgotten to mention that we have an ultrasound today…and there are things I want to ask the doctor about.” I said.
“Like what?”
“Well, I was looking online, and it said that you wouldn’t be able to tell if it’s a boy or a girl until the 16th week. AND I feel like the baby’s bigger than it should be for 14 weeks.” I said. “I think the nurse made a mistake, and I’m further along than they told me.
”We’ll find out when we get there.” He said.
***
“Just out of curiosity…how far along am I?” I asked the ultrasound technician after she squirted the cold goo on my stomach and got a clear picture of our baby.
“You’re about…16 weeks along.” She said, clicking on the computer and typing something.
“But…I should only be 14 weeks along…the last technician told me I was ten weeks along.” I frowned; looking at Nolan who’s expression mirrored mine.
“She was two weeks off. When did she say your due date was?”
“September 21st.” I grumbled. “What’s the real due date?”
“Around October 8th” She said. “Do you remember what her name was?”
“I think it was…Melissa? Melinda? Something along those lines.” I sighed.
“We have a new girl working here who’s name is Melinda. Was she a short brunette?”
“Yes! That’s her.”
“She’s only been working as an ultrasound technician for a little under two months,”
“And how long have you been working here?” I asked, eyeing her suspiciously.
“Twenty years, dear.” She smiled and I relaxed.
“Okay, I trust you. Carry on.” I sighed. “Wait, she told us we were having a boy, did she get that right?” I asked and she zoomed in on our baby.
“I can’t tell…the baby’s legs are crossed.” She said, squinting at the screen.
“Come on, baby.” I whispered to myself, rubbing circles on the sides of my stomach.
“We can always come back to that. Look, here’s a leg, and here’s a head, there’s the other leg.” She said, clicking on each limb and labeling it. “There’s one arm…there’s the other…oh!” She said in surprise. “The baby’s legs are uncrossed. It looks like Melinda was right. You are indeed having a baby boy.”
“Yes!” Nolan shouted.
“Would you like a picture of your baby?” She asked and I nodded. “Do you have any questions?”
“Yeah…is my baby freakishly large?” I asked.
“Not freakishly large…you’re husband is…quite big, so your baby is going to be bigger than most.” She said and I nodded, hoping that I don’t have a ten pound baby.
***
“Mom?” I asked later that afternoon while I was sitting on their couch; Nolan, his brothers, dad and Izzy were all out grocery shopping. “How big were the boys when they were born?”
“Let’s see…I’m just going to go grab their birth certificates real quick.”
“You don’t have to do that.”
“Nonsense.” She said, waving a hand in the air. “They’re in a file in the garage.” She said and left for a few minutes before coming back a few minutes later with three birth certificates.
“That was fast.” I said and she showed me Gavin’s.
“Gavin was 8 pounds, 10 ounces and 21 inches long.” She said and then put Gavin’s birth certificate at the back. “Nolan was 9 pounds, eleven ounces and 23 inches long.” She said and showed me Ethan’s. “And Ethan was 8 pounds, 4 ounces and 21 inches long.”
“Our baby is going to be humungous.” I groaned. “Were the deliveries terrible?”
“The first delivery is always the hardest. Don’t worry, they get easier.”
I smiled slightly at her. “Do you have any advice?”
“Take the drugs. The minute they let you have them, take them.” She said.
I shook my head. “No drugs.”
“Sweetie…as a mother who has delivered three babies, I strongly advise you to take any and all pain medication that they offer you.” She said.
“I want a natural delivery.” I told her.
“Sweetie…”
“Look…I want to try this my way. I want to go as long as I can without any drugs.”
“Alright,” she sighed. “But don’t say I didn’t warn you.” She said.
“Don’t worry, I won’t.” I smiled.
“Want to watch a movie?” She asked and I nodded.
“Which one?”
“I dunno…surprise me.” I told her and she hopped up from the couch, put a movie in the DVD player and then sat back on the couch, pushing play.
