Part Twelve
I take a look inside the abandoned apartment my mother has left me to live in, taking a deep breath and letting the last of my tears leave my eyes. She has left me for a long time and I doubt she will ever come back for me.
"Where would you like us to place this Miss Jones?" the furniture man asks me, signaling to my bed. I direct them to the bedroom and they place it against the wall. Most of the afternoon is me telling them where to put the furniture, mostly new furniture my mother bought for me. It takes up most of my day, leaving me no energy to go to the bookstore.
I throw my hair into a ponytail and put my boots on, walking out the door and to Ruth's across the street. I walk in and her smile makes my day brighter.
"I'm sorry about your mom Beth. She'll get better."
I nod and she tells me to just go home. I do so and shed my coat by the door. I plug in my iPod and let music fill the apartment. I walk to my bedroom and put the sheets on my bed, letting the white sheets contrast the already navy blue walls. I fill the drawers with my clothes, unpacking everything from the boxes and decorating my room.
It feels empty and lonely. The dark walls make me feel closed off and the night sky isn't all that promising either.
I walk to the living room, the music still in my ears, and place some pillows on the couch. I want to do something that will help me break in this house, but nothing seems to come to mind. It is boring; alone in my own thoughts.
I hear the doorbell ring and I answer it, meeting a boy around my age.
"You must be my new neighbor," he smiles, handing me a box. "This was outside your door and I thought you might want them."
I open the box and see all my books. I thank him and invite him in.
"I'm Liam," he says, extending his hand.
"Beth," I respond, shaking his hand and smiling.
"So what made you decide to move here?"
I place the box on the table and he sits down on the chair. My fingers fumble with the books and I place them on the counter.
"Uh, my mom is in a medical center in Los Angeles so I had to move out. I just left her this morning and it's been hard."
"Aww, I'm sorry Beth. But the same thing happened to my friend a while ago. Never saw her so happy to see how her mom was after."
I smile and the doorbell rings again. I excuse myself and walk towards the door, opening it to see Harry smiling. He kisses my cheek quickly and walks in.
"How are you today baby?" He asks.
"Good. Come talk with me and Liam," I plead, dragging him into the kitchen. Liam stands and shakes Harry's hand. Harry stares at him angrily and I kick his foot. I shoot him a glare and the two guys start talking, finding out that Liam has a fiancée. Harry loosens up after that and they talk about football as I place books on the bookshelf.
"I am going to have to go, got a ton of work to do. It was nice meeting you guys," Liam tells us, smiling and walking towards the door.
"Bye Liam, it was really nice meeting you," I tell him. He smiles and walks out the door, closing it behind him.
I walk towards Harry and he smiles at me before grabbing my waist and setting me on his lap.
"Are you feeling okay?" he asks, kissing my cheek.
