Part Ninety
"Has he always read?" Ruth asks, my feet standing on my tiptoes to reach the top shelf.
"Yes. Harry doesn't want people to know about it though. He's very quiet about it," I explain, Ruth's smile never leaving her lips.
"That's good to hear. I'm glad he's interested in books like you are. A common interest for him with a girl is very helpful for him, especially with the high school experience he had."
I nod and finish stacking the few books in my hand and going to the register. Taking two orders near closing is very strange, but once I finish, Ruth closes up.
"Are you ready to go?" she asks, considering she offered me a ride to Emma's house. Giving her a nod, we walk to the back room and I grab my phone, both of us walking out the door.
At about 4:30, we arrive at Emma's and I thank Ruth, telling her I'll see we Wednesday. She smiles and nods, my feet walking to the front door. Emma stopped by at work today and I gave her the key to my apartment to get the suitcase, then she returned and told me to still come over.
My fingers form a fist and I knock on her door, the door opening in seconds. Her hair is all over her face and she looks scared and worried, my body moving into the house quickly.
"Emma, what's wrong?" I ask, seeing as all of the girls are here. Her fingers wrap around my arm and we sit at the table, all of us watching as Emma hesitantly moves around us.
"Something occurred and I never in a million years thought that it could happen," she reveals, my eyes looking at Morgan and Gabby, who are equally nervous with what we're about to hear.
"I was sitting on the couch, finishing a few assignments for one of my classes when a knock on the door sounds. Getting up to answer it, I open the door and see Greg Hobbs."
"No," Gabby gasps, my worried expression the same as the other girls.
Emma only gives a slight nod before continuing, her hands tightly gripped around each other, her knuckles turning white.
"He came in and told me he was sorry. For what, I don't know, but I accepted it just so I didn't upset him. But he looked at me, so sadly as if he was holding back something, and I asked of he was alright."
We all nod simultaneously as Emma talks, knowing her intentions were only acting in understanding. Greg Hobbs was a boy with a past, but deep down there is good. I've dated the good Greg but he's not even existent anymore.
"He broke down in tears and I was standing there confused, wanting to help him but not get hurt. But anyways, I took one step towards him and his hands were on my cheeks, my eyes wide."
Gabby glances at me and my stomach turns, knowing Greg did the most unthinkable thing.
"The next thing I know, his lips are on mine and he pulls away, whispering another apology to me, his forehead on mine and my face tightly held in his hands. He kept saying he's sorry for giving up and wishing he could find someone. He claims to regret hurting Beth and for that, he comes and kisses me?! What kind of son of a bitch does that?!"
My body moves out of the chair and I hug Emma, her lips emitting cries. Her pain is in the unknowing what to do in the situation, not knowing whether to give into Greg or push him away.
"But he pulled me back in and I'll admit it, I kissed him back. Only because I was scared and nervous I would get hurt."
Her arms tighten around my body and the other two get up, joining the hug together.
"Emma you did the right thing," Morgan says, her hand rubbing Emma's back.
"I agree. If you stopped him, who knows what would have happened," I add, feeling as though I'm about to throw up. That boy is repulsive and disgusting.
