Home. There's no place quite like it but Lila and Bam's home wasn't finished yet. They couldn't go back to the trapper shack with the twins as it had not been properly cleaned since the emergency delivery. Ami and Billy made room in the main cabin for the family of four. The priority was to finish the project by the end of the week. Everyone would have to help to make the goal of five days. The exterior had been finished but the interior still needed furniture and final touches.
Just after dinner on their first night home, the family gathered for an impromptu baby shower for Lila. Bam and Lila closed their eyes as Noah and Matt carried in their handmade cradle for the twins. Billy had carved their names and hearts in the headboard. When Bam and Lila opened their eyes, they were both moved by the gesture. The twins would have a lovely little place to sleep tonight. Lila and Bam exchanged hugs with Matt and Noah. Gabe was up next with his artistic endeavor. He had painted canvases featuring a bear, a wolf and a deer for the babies' space in the new house. He was a rather gifted artist although his family thought his true gift was his strength and humor.
Ami, Bear, Bird and Rain presented their gifts last. Bird and Bear presented the red quilt and Ami and Rain presented the blue quilt. Bear noted that the red one was his idea because pink cloth was a little more difficult to find. Lila fingered the hem and the stitching taking note of each piece of fabric that came from a garment that each family member had worn.
"I can't tell you how much all of you mean to me." Lila wrapped her arm through Bam's arm. "You have welcomed me in your life and now we welcome home the next generation of Browns. To say, I love you and thank you for everything is not enough." Lila began to tear up. "And to my best friend, Mattie, I can never repay you for delivering my children. You, my friend, are a blessing in my life." Matt toed the floor with his boot trying not to show how touched he was by her remarks. Lila and Bam wrapped Matt between them giving him an extra bear hug. He was the real hero in the room and Lila and Bam wanted him to know it.
As the family members made their way to their respective homes, Lila placed the twins in the cradle and covered them with their new quilts. Bam gently rocked the cradle as the babies fell asleep. Lila snuggled next next to him on the temporary pallet they had made next to their babies. It would be a long week for all of them but home would be a reality by the weekend.
