I woke up to the sound of knocking on the door. Groggy and disoriented, I sat up slowly and rubbed my eyes. I looked at clock on the wall. It said 6:57. I guess I fell asleep.
I stood up and walked over to the door and opened it. My aunt looked at me and smiled. She clutched a bag in her hand and had on a white coat and scarf
"Hey Kori. How are you?"
"Oh hey Aunt Carrie. I'm fine. How are you?" That's a big lie.
"Oh I'm great. I just came by to see how you two were doing. May I come in?"
I stepped aside and nodded. She walked in and looked around setting the bag on the table. She sat down on the couch and I sat next to her. Her short Auburn hair falling on her back as she sat. Her eyes were fixed on me
"Is your mother at work? I did see her car in the driveway though."
I looked down.
"She quit today," I said quietly.
"She quit? So..."
"She's sleeping right now."
I looked down at my wrapped up hand.
"Did she do that?" Aunt Carrie asked me.
I looked at her and thought about it for a moment. She gave me a sympathetic look, helping me continue.
"No... She dropped her liquor on the floor and the bottle shattered. She was crying and she tried picking up the glass but I pushed it away. I think that's when I cut myself."
"She was drinking?" She sighed and shook her head.
"She's getting worse. Ever since Dad died she's been giving up on everything. First the bills and now her job." I said and looked at where the door to her bedroom was.
Aunt Carrie nodded and hugged me.
"I'm sorry. That you have to take care of your mother. I just hope she gets better. But I got you something." She grabbed the bag she held before and gave it to me.
"What is it?" I asked looking at the bag.
"Come on, just open it. I'm sure you'll like it."
I smiled a little as a little excitement filled my mind and opened up the bag to see a black digital camera sitting at the bottom. I took it out and looked at it amazed.
"Aunt Carrie! You didn't have to-"
"Well you broke your other camera right? I just thought you could start taking those good photos of yours." She smiled at me.
"Thank you Aunt Carrie. Your right I do love it." I smiled and hugged her.
"Alright Dear. I need to get back to work. Tell your mother I said hi." I smiled and nodded.
I walked her out the door and waved her goodbye. As she drove away in her grey Mustang, I walked over to my new camera and picked it up.
I put film in it and looked through the lense. It worked perfectly. I set it down and smiled.
My stomach started growling. I walked into the kitchen and looked through the cabinets. We had a little bit of bread and some peanut butter. I made a sandwich with them and sat at the small dinner table.
