Chapter 1 | Lost

The wind was roaring in the great trees of the land, as if it were some wild dark grove deep in a forgotten land. It flowed between the button holes, chilling my skin beneath and tousled my hair to ringlets. It kind of ticks me because after being blown by the wind, I’ll never get a comb through it without half a gallon of conditioner. I will not be surprised if my hair looks like a bird’s nest right now.

The wind was so strong, the leaves were moving wildly as they fell down on my head just completing my bird’s nest look. I toss my head back and raised my eyes to the sky and a smile spreaded across my face. The branches swayed like the arms of a soccer crowd and in their chaotic dance they are hypnotically beautiful.

I was in the school’s cheerleading team as the head cheerleader so it reminded me of that. My mind relaxed and I feel the happiness of my life bubble up from within. I started spinning like a little girl, arms out wide and fingers spread and let out a happy giggle as I stepped my foot into the forest.

As if on cue, a loud rumbling thunder erupted across the mysterious dark sky and I held onto my phone as I squealed in excitement.

I loved the thrill, the adventure, the feeling of the danger running through my veins. My heart beated wildly as I shone the light from my phone across the dirty, leaf-covered floor of the forest.

Maybe I should go back, because it seemed like it would start raining anytime soon. I turned around to look at the mansion far away to see the light being turned off in my room. Must be my sister, only she knew about my adventurous night.

No, I really wanted to do this. Besides, I loved the rain.

I started walking into the forest after taking a deep breath of course. I checked my pocket one last time for my knife and it was still there, pressing onto my thigh to let me know its there. Leaves and twigs crunched beneath my feet and the wind blew wildly. For a moment, I wanted to tie up my hair because it was blocking my vision.

I kept a look-out for any other animals and almost jumped at the sound of an owl.

Man, the forest really was scary and it was a bad idea to enter, but, I love bad ideas. They make good memories and I can tell my grandchildren Mary and John about my adventures. Yes, I have named my grandchildren. Doesn’t mean that I am a rebel, I don’t fantasize about my future.

Although my love-life is non-existent, that’s just only because no guy can handle all my craziness. They back out after a month or so. I am that rebellious and I need someone who can actually tame me.

I wonder who that unlucky guy might be.

I turned around to look behind my back and there were only forests. No sight of the land or any mansions. For a moment, I felt my heart beat race at the probability of being lost but that stopped when a drop of cold water touched my forehead. I let my hand touch my forehead and goosebumps erupted all over my body at how cold and icy it was.

Suddenly, there was silence in the forest and it seemed like the wind had stopped for just a millisecond before rain started pouring down like cats and dogs. Squealing at the coldness, I immediately started running back towards my mansion.

Looks like this mission can be for tomorrow night.

I ran, my feet padded against the dirty ground as drops of cold rain dripped down my body. I felt freezing cold and could feel my body going numb at the the chillness. My lips started quivering and my breath came out as a white fog as I continued running.

All of a sudden, a white fog blocked my vision and my heart started racing as I stood at the spot, circling around to find my way but the white fog was so thick, I felt like I was in a horror movie for a second. I started running again, hoping its the right direction as tears of fear filled my vision.

Shit, this is a stupid idea.

You realise that now?

I didn’t know how long I was running but I didn’t stop and I never looked behind, afraid I might see something scary. Something got stuck on my foot, and immediately I fell down. A sharp pain shooted up my right ankle and a twig pressed hard into my forehead, leaving a bruise there.

My face was flat on the muddy floor and lightning flashed across the stormy sky. I groaned, lifting my head up to see. But, my vision was blurry and I tried to stand up, dragging my knee across the floor painfully snow. The wind howled, and rain pattered against my back. I lifted myself off the ground after a lot of pain and started running again. My energy was almost gone and pain shot up my ankle everytime I placed my right feet on the ground.

I gulped, moving my hair out of face and the rain brushed off some of the mud on my body. Suddenly, the fog around me lifted and I gasped as lightning flashed, its light showing me a vision of a huge mansion, scratch that, a castle, standing dark and proud in the middle of the forest.

Thanking the lord, I quickly moved, as I admired the castle. There was a huge door, golden and dark, with flower patterns carved all over them. I held onto the door for support and started knocking.

I continued knocking a few more times, but no one opened the door and I cursed under my breath feeling hopeless and weak. My vision was so blurry that I was sure I would faint any second.

With all my strength, I pushed the door open, and blackness met my vision. It was so black and dark, for a second, I thought that I was going to faint. I let myself inside the room, closing the door behind me, and feeling relief as warmth surrounded me.

But, my knees buckled and gave out underneath me as I fell down onto the carpet, my eyes closing. Gravity pulled me down and refused to let me get up and I gave into the darkness, not before I heard the faint whisper of someone saying,

It’s a girl.”
