Chapter 17 | Curse
There was a small wooden boat floating in front us and I smiled, feeling excited and knowing that it is being to a damn long night. Happiness bubbled inside of me as he gestured for me to sit in the boat. I held on his arm tightly as I climbed onto the boat and he followed behind me. I squealed when the boat shook and hugged him tightly, feeling scared.
His chest rumbled with laughter and the boat shook again, this time even more and I felt myself hugging him tighter. I realised that he was purposely shaking the boat and I let go of him. But, that was wrong move because I toppled down, tumbling backwards. Just my luck, I had grabbed onto his collar and pulled him down with me. Our nose were inches away and my breath hitched.
A faint blush appeared on my cheeks and I was praying to God that he couldn’t see it. He kissed my cheeks, letting me know that he did see it before sitting up on the boat, pulling me up with him and I smiled.
He held the oar, throwing me one and started rowing the other oar. I looked at him baffled that he is making me row the boat too. “I thought you were a gentleman.”
“You have hands, row the boat,” He raised his eyebrows, looking dead serious and I laughed. “It’s fun anyway.”
I held onto the oar and started rowing the boat, feeling happy. If it was any other guy, I’m sure they would have rowed the boat and not let the lady row it too but this is Jack here. And, that is what I loved about him. His element of surprise. The spark he had which never died. The way he would always be himself and not change into a gentleman just for a date.
Suddenly, a bat came flying towards us out of nowhere and I squealed, trying to shoo the bat away, when it tried to land on my head. Jack tried to push it away with the oar but it kept flying over us and I was getting annoyed, ducking.
“Stupid Bat! You are ruining date night!” I shouted, lifting the oar and whacked it hard on the bat to which it flew away into the forest. Jack laughed and I joined in the laughter too when suddenly he motioned me to be quiet. I immediately quietened down and he gestured me to look around. Frowning I stopped the rowing the boat and took a look around.
I gasped as tiny lights circled around me. Like fireflies. But, they were brighter than that. They were flying like small stars around us and it was beautiful.
“It is beautiful.” I said and looked at him and found him staring at me.
“Not as beautiful as you.” He said and I smiled, blushing heavily.
“Tell me something I don’t know.” I said and he narrowed his eyes at me in amusement.
“There is a fairy behind you.” He said and my eyes widened, turning my head around, my eyes met a fairy who was now waving at me shyly. I smiled waving back and it moved to the front before flying away. Only then I realised that all the lights surrounding us were fairies. It was such a romantic atmosphere and the still water, the calm quietness, the soft breeze rushing through my hair, it was just too perfect.
“You never told me about the rose.” I said, and looked at him to see him go tense all of a sudden before he breathed out a loud sigh.
“Why do you want to know so much about the rose?” He asked, his voice indicating frustration.
“I know I am involved in it.” I said and he pursed his lips, feeling annoyed and I waited for him to open up.
“What do you want to know?” He asked, shrugging.
“Everything.”
He let out a sigh and gave me a pointed look before opening the basket infront of us. He held up a waffle and I grinned, grabbing it from him and we were both eating waffles now.
“First, you need to know about my past.” He said and my eyes brightened, my senses became alert, eager to know more about his life.
“Once upon a time, there was a Prince in the name of Jack Napier.” He winked and I laughed, taking another bite out of the waffle. “Everyone loved him and he had the best family. A king, a queen and two lovely sisters.” My eyebrows raised at the new information. He paused for awhile and a frown took over his face. “Everything started falling apart when his parents were brutally murdered in front of him by the enemies.”
I gasped, covering my mouth and leant forward, holding his hand, incase he breaks down.
“His two sisters were brutally raped and killed in front of him.” Tears filled my eyes at the mere thought of it and he looked at me as I held his hand tightly. His eyes were glistening with unshed tears as well and I felt my heart break slowly at his state. “He couldn’t do anything to help but scream to them to let his family go. They tied him up and made him watch everything.”
I gulped down the tears threatening to fall and moved closer towards him.
“Then the once known Kind Prince Napier was gone. In his place, a much more lethal, revenge-seeking, blood thirsty Prince took over and he was brutal and evil in every way. Killing anyone who dares cross his path. They called him the beast.” He paused and I looked at him, in an understanding manner knowing that sympathy is not what he needed right now.
“One day, he went too far and messed with an enchantress. She wanted to teach the prince a lesson for she thought that the Prince can’t love. She cursed him. She removed his good looks.” He paused. “The rose is the curse.”
