Chapter 10: Smiling through the [Damaged, Broken, and] Excruciating Pain.

Ryan’s POV:

“You… you promise?” I heard faintly in my ears.

Wait. What? “Lynsey?” I asked walking towards the bed, I noticed she was now on oxygen with the plastic pieces in her nose. I could hear it feeding oxygen to her.

“Yeah.” she coughed, “Yeah it’s me.”

“Oh my goodness, Lyns you sca…”

“Do you promise?” she interrupted looking up at me with her wounded eyes.

“Do I promise what?” I asked.

She tried to sit up, but I could tell how much it hurt her. “Lynsey, no. Don’t.”

“Ryan…” she said.

“Yeah?” I asked looking at her, still in shock that I was actually talking to her.

“Thanks. thank you.” she said sleepily.

“Don’t leave me again Lynsey. Not again.” I said getting a little closer to the bed.

“Don’t worry Ryan.” she said, “Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere. Come, sit with me.”

I was standing a few feet away then walked to sit in the chair that was still by the bed. “No Ryan. Sit with me.” she patted the bed warily.

I walked over hesitantly. She laughed, but then coughed, “You aren’t going to break me. Come on.” Her voice was really raspy and not wanting to argue with her, I walked over and sat gently on the bed. She looked at me and smiled, “Hey.”

“Hey Lyns.” I smiled back at her.

“So… how long have I been out?” she asked looking over at the clock.

“Well you’ve been out all day basically. I think that your mom came in to visit you and Payton shortly after you both arrived at the hospital, but then had to go back to work.” I said, happy to hear her voice again.

A worried look appeared on her face, “Payton. Oh my God Payton!” she screamed. She tried to get up again, so I had to hold her on the bed, “No Lynsey, no. You can’t get up. Save your stren…”

“I’ve got to see her Ryan. Is she okay? Where is she? Ryan, please. I have to see her.” she looked at me with panicked eyes.

“Lynsey. Lay down okay? I will go find out how she is. Just calm down, okay?” I told her, she looked at me, seeming a little more relaxed.

“okay…” she responded, laying back down.

I walked out and went to the desk on the fourth floor by the elevator. “Hi. I’m wondering if you can give me information on a girl who was checked in this morning. Her name is Payton Merrick.”

The woman looked up at me and smiled, “Of course,” she typed on her keyboard, “yes she is in room 428. Um… my records say that she has a healthy heart rate and I believe she woke up earlier this morning, very stable. You can go and see her if you’d like.” she said.

“Thank you. I will.” I said and walked to Lynsey’s room first.

She looked over at me, “How is she?”
