Chapter 17: Flashlights
Lynsey’s POV:
Soon it was lunchtime and we had ordered two pizzas one cheese and the other pepperoni from Nick’s Pizza Parlor. Surprisingly no one had left to go anywhere yet, not even Ryan. The pizza man came and I gave him some money for the pies, thanking him as he walked back to his car and drove away. I came back with them in my lap and asked if someone could come help get plates, cups, and soda from the kitchen.
“Sure.” Ryan and Payton said at the same time, but Ryan had stood up.
“You go ahead.” Payton said and looked over at me, winking.
I stuck my tongue out at her and wheeled myself towards the kitchen before I felt Ryan grab the handles to push me. When we got the kitchen I could feel the hotness on my cheeks and he went over to the cabinet I had pointed out to get the plates and cups. He placed them on the counter before heading to the fridge. Man this silence was awkward.
“So do you have to be home at any certain time?” I broke the silence.
He turned to face me, “Nope, but we do start up school tomorrow so… at a some-what reasonable hour.”
“Oh yeah.” I said completely forgetting tomorrow was the Second of January.
I must have looked sad because he responded back, “Well that’s if we don’t lose power.”
“Lose power?” I asked, not knowing what the hell he meant.
“Yeah. Another giant storm is supposed to hit around six.” he said, “They say we might even lose power.”
“Oh?” I smiled, making him laugh and my joy of the house going dark and not having to go back to school just yet.
“Yeah.” he took everything in his hands, “I think this is everything.”
I nodded as he walked over and placed it in my lap, making my spine tingle as the back of his hands gently brushed against my thighs. He walked behind me and pushed me out to the living room. Surprisingly one more guest had joined the party, my mother.
I laughed as I was brought to a stop and Ryan had went to sit down on the floor, “Nice of you to join us mom.” I said and she glared at me, “Want some pizza?”
She nodded and Shawn passed her a piece of pepperoni pizza.
Payton and I had another one of our mind conversations that went like this this time,
Sooo……?
No. Nothing.
WHAT! UGHHHH WHYY?
I don’t know Payton.
Well it needs to happen like soon. Gosh.
It would’ve if you hadn’t…
Shut-up.
Once everyone had gotten a piece, we ate just carrying polite conversation, me catching Payton giving me a glare or Ryan every once in a while.
Sooner or later it was four and the boys had gone to Shawn’s room to play video games, while Payton and I stayed in the living room to watch more Castle, yes we have a problem. My mom headed out to waitress tonight and said that if the storm hits bad her boss is letting the staff stay in rooms at the hotel. So again it was just the four teenagers and a college student alone in the house, what could go wrong? Around 4:45 the storm started to hit, six o’clock my ass. By five it was hitting hard and the lights started to flicker. They flickered three times within five minutes and the fourth time was not a flicker, it was out for good.
