dylan's family had came by the hospital several times. there was nothing they could do for him except be there, but eventually, they had to go home. brooke never left his side, though. she was always telling him stories from the news or something their kids had done.
it had been a week, and brooke felt like dylan would never wake up. she would never get to see him smile or laugh again. she would never get to tell him she loves him or let him know she forgives him. he was going to leave her without saying goodbye, and that realization, broke her.
brooke had really been trying to put on a rave face, but it was hard. all of the magazines and news articles got worse and worse as his condition stayed the same. brooke didn't have any good news for anyone. he wasn't getting better. dylan was moving closer and closer to that bright light and brooke couldn't take that.
"dylan? baby?" she said softly, rubbing his hand. "if you're listening, i need you to hear this." a single tear fell down her cheek. "i love you dylan o'brien. i am in love with you, and i haven't stopped being in love with you. you are my rock, baby, and i need you more than anything in this world. i don't know what i'm gonna do if you leave me. how am i gonna live knowing that you died thinking i hated you. what am i gonna do without your sarcastic comments? or your witty comebacks?" she chuckled lightly. "baby, please don't leave your kids without a father. don't leave them with a mother who will be emotionally unstable... i miss you dylan, okay? i miss you and i need you to come back to me." she finished, resting her head on his arm.
after minutes of silence, she heard a noise. she popped her head up and examined him intently, he could be waking up. she watched his chest for a few seconds. just as she was about to look away, she saw his chest get very large and then fall again. he was breathing on his own. she threw a hand over her face and ran to get the doctor. "he's breathing!" she yelled.
the doctor watched as his chest moved with the rhythm of the oxygen flowing through his body. "he is." the doctor said. "we can take this off now." he said, removing the oxygen mask from his face. brooke smiled when she saw his pointed nose and mouth pulled into a thin line, along with the moles covering the bottom of his face. "he should wake up fairly soon." the doctor spoke. "we can't know for sure how he will react when he wakes up because of the swelling in his brain. he could have short-term, or long-term amnesia. or, he could be perfectly fine."
"what's the worst case-scenario?" she asked the doctor, chewing on her fingernails nervously.
the doctor sighed. "he won't remember anything, and it will be permanent."
"oh..." brooke trailed off, looking at dylan and watching his chest rise and fall. "thank you." the doctor nodded and left the room, leaving brooke to watch dylan by herself. "you better remember." she said to him, poking his arm lightly.
