checking the time on my phone, i see it's 6:40. i sigh, locking my phone before opening up chapter one of the last book in the trilogy the firebird series written by claudia gray. my eyes scan the page as i push up my glasses every now and then, making sure they don't droop. i checked the time here and there, and once it was finally 6:47, i look to see the subway car halting to a stop before me. i bookmark my spot and shut the book closed, holding it under my arm as i grab my bag. stepping into the second car, i find a seat by the door. just before the doors closed, a man, slightly taller than me— with what appears to be mint green hair— steps inside panting. his eyes landed on the empty seat to my left and he immediately pops a squat. i already had my book open, my eyes scanning the pages as I try to find out what will happen to marguerite caine as triadverse marguerite and theo invade their bodies.
i had earphones in, playing music at a soft volume. not once did i raise my eyes from the pages. i'm a total bookworm and I enjoy being one. i don't see what's wrong with falling in love with how an author words their books. i also don't see what's wrong with falling for fictional characters before falling out of love with them to fall for another in a different book. that's how bookworms work; we fall in love with one in one book before moving onto the next book and falling for another.
the regular 13-15 minute ride halted at the familiar stop i greet every weekday. i bookmark my spot, grab my bag, and leave the car. i walk up the stairs to lead me out into the city. i let out a breath after stepping outside, seeing my warm breath dissipate into the cold, late-february morning air. spring is on its way and i'm a bit disappointed. i've always loved the cold, it makes for the best outfits and laughter. wherever i turn, i see happy people with people who they, i assume, love or i see expressionless faces rushing to work.
and i'm disappointed to say i'm one of those expressionless people.
