"You should check out the roof, it's pretty awesome so I'm told," he tells me. I resist the urge to roll my eyes.

"Whatever," I say. I plug in my headphones, ignoring my mom's glare. Hey, it's not my fault she got remarried and packed us up and moved us from Pennsylvania to California. She can't expect me to be happy to be leaving in the middle of my junior year of high school. Ditching my best friend since preschool and boyfriend of three years. It doesn't matter that I've wanted to live in Los Angeles for pretty much my entire life or that my new stepdad is head honcho at the record label where some of my favorite artists are signed. I don't want a new life. I want to graduate high school with my best friend and not have to deal with the long distance relationship struggle. And yet here I am. I left my old life behind as I got on that flight this morning with my mom. Did I cry saying goodbye to Kaitlyn and Alex? Hell yeah. But I dried my tears, fixed my eyeliner, and put on a face that blatantly tells people 'don't talk to me I'm pissed'.

Stepdad met us at the airport. Mom ran into his arms as if she hadn't saw him in years, when really she just saw him like a week ago when he was here helping her finish packing. I walked slowly, dragging my feet. He tried to hug me and it felt awkward and foreign. I sunk into the black leather seat in the car, plugging one of my headphones into my ear and blasting the All American Rejects. Mom and what's-his-face started their own conversation, leaving me alone to my thoughts.

*Flashback to four hours earlier*

"I'll come and visit you on spring break," Alex told me as tears rushed down my face. I nod and he pulls me close.

"I love you baby girl, don't forget that," he said. He kissed the top of my head before releasing me so I could move on to Kaitlynn.

"If you come across any blond haired buff surfer guys, send them my way okay?" she asked. I laughed a little. I pulled my best friend close and we cried together before laughing at each other for acting like such big babies.

"I gotta go," I told the two of them. I slung my backpack onto my shoulder before waving goodbye and heading on to the flight that would take me to my new home and life.

"Here we are, you guys can just leave your suitcases in the car. I'll have someone come grab them later," Stepdad says. I peek out my window to the mansion I'll be living in. It's giant. I'm going to get lost in this house.

"After you m'lady," SD says as he opens my door. He smiles at me and I manage a small one back. He grabs my mom's hand as we walk up the steps to the front door.

"Hola, you must be Avery. I am Maria, the housekeeper," a small woman greets me after opening the door.

"Hola senora," I say to her. She smiles warmly.

"Hablas espanol? Bien chica!" she says. I smile back.

"Dinner needs to be ready in an hour Maria," SD commands as he walks in after me. She nods and hurries off.

"So first floor has living room, dining room, kitchen, backyard access, bathrooms and our room," SD says, more to my mom than to me.

"Avery your room is on the third floor if you want to head up. Liz, let me show you the backyard," SD says as he steers my mom away. I roll my eyes and walk up the stairs. Opening doors to find rooms upon rooms upon rooms. The second floor has a movie room, library, and like four extra bedrooms. I follow the stairs up to the third and final floor. After walking down a long and narrow hallway, past a game room and some empty rooms and two bathrooms, I finally come to the last door which I'm assuming is mine. I push the door open to find all of my things from back home piled up. There's a king sized bed in the middle of the room. A desk sits in one corner and a futon in the other. A flat screen TV is mounted on the white wall.
