I fluttered my eyes open, blinking harshly when bright sunlight shone over my face. After I adapted to the sudden brightness, I sat up and rubbed my eyes.
Where am I?
I looked around, seeing familiar spotless furniture and smelling the familiar medicine smell. The air was quiet around me except for the beeping of a monitor, the drips of the pack that had an IV connected into my arm, and the humming of the air conditioner.
Ah, I’m in a hospital.
But why am I here?
I scratched my nose, trying to remember what I did the night before. Or was it just last night? How long have I been asleep? Who was I with?
Oh right, I was with Hyuna and Minri, but what we did that day, or night—I don’t remember.
Why can’t I remember anything?
I began to grow frustrated, and I heard my heart monitor begin to pick up. I took slow deep breaths, but it seems that the sudden change in heart rate caused a doctor to rush into my room. He said nothing but checked my condition immediately. He looked young to be a doctor, but looks can be deceiving.
“Do you remember your name?” He asked me suddenly.
I hesitated before answering. “Hara Hyo Min.”
He nodded, “Do you know why you’re here?”
“Ah, no. I’m trying to figure that out myself.”
The doctor nodded, and glanced down to write something on his clipboard. He had a relieved expression on his face and I couldn’t help but ask, “Is something wrong with me?”
He looked up at me and met my eyes directly. “Two nights ago, how should I explain this simply,” he cut off and thought for a brief second, “the sudden attack of your brain producing brain cells seemed too strong for you; therefore you had a rush of flashbacks hitting you. You regained your memories of your past you couldn’t remember previously. We’re still trying to figure out why you passed out for so long, but it’s a relief that you’re healthy.”
“Healthy.” I repeated his words softly, slowly regaining my memories as he explained my condition. “So, do I still…?”
“Yes, you do still have it.” His tone was sympathetic and I wanted to puke. “You need to have an operation on it to be fully recovered, but it being a success is not guaranteed. It’s a fifty-fifty gamble.”
“Fifty-fifty gamble?”
“We either succeed and you’re cancer free, or we fail to completely remove it and you die in the process.” He answered straightforwardly. “However Hyomin, your new medication is rapidly slowing the growth of the cancer, but it’s not completely stopping it. You don’t even need chemotherapy because of it. I can’t guarantee if you’ll survive or not without surgery.”
I shook my head, tugging my lips up into a grin. “You don’t need to guarantee anything. Knowing I still have a chance makes me want to be stronger.”
The doctor nodded and reached for my arm, removing my IV with ease. “I’m assuming you’re beginning to remember everything, yes?”
