We are trained for more than 10 years on how to treat patients, save and care for them.
However, we are never formally trained on how to deal with the loss of a patient.
We're told that in order to do our work , we have to put our feelings aside, but they always forget that we are humans and as long as we have hearts, we will always have feelings.
I've had friends from university that ended up not using their medical degrees because according to them, the effect being a doctor has on their mental health isn't worth it.
However, patients come and go and we try as much as we can to save most, but some we cannot.

It's been almost 2 weeks since baba passed away. I remember the way his secretary, Mr Hashim froze when i delivered the news. He and baba were very close that one could mistake him for baba's son.

I was in my office when i got a call from the reception telling me that Hashim was here to see me so i told her to let him in. However, he and another guy walked in to the office.

"Salamu alaikum" said hashim "Dr yasmin it's been 2 weeks since we last spoke"
"Hashim, how are you coping?"
"Alhamdulillah" I said as I looked at the other person who was staring at me with an unreadable look.
"This is Alhaji Aminu's son, Fahad."
"Please accept my deepest condolences" I said sincerely.
However, he didn't even reply me but instead looked down and started typing into his phone.
Mind you, this is the first time I'm seeing someone related to Baba. So I was shocked for 2 reasons. The first one being the fact that baba never mentioned having a son and second being that the Fahad Guy was arrogant.

"Dr, I'm here today to talk about something important "he said while sitting up straight.
"What do you mean Hashim"
"Well before Alhaji passed away he wrote down his will. However, the only problem is nothing can happen without your consent"
He passed me the paper and I started reading. I read the paper 3 times but nothing was adding up. I finally looked at Hashim and said
"I don't understand anything. What is this?"
"What you just read says in order for Alhaji's only son Fahad to get his inheritance, you two have to get married for at least a year, if not the money should be donated to the less fortunate."

"I think you've got the wrong Yasmin"I said as I quickly passed the paper back to Hashim.

"Isn't that what you want? " said Fahad the mute finally said.

"Excuse me?" I asked as I looked at him.

"Isn't that what you wanted?" He repeated noncholantly. "For all I know, you drugged him into writing this will. Drop the facade because I can see right through you and I can tell from the distance that you're a gold digger" Said Fahad while sneering.

I didn't know why but I couldn't control myself because the next thing I heard was the sound of my hand slapping Fahad.

"Mind the way you talk to people Mister man. You can't come into my office and insult me. Please excuse me" I said as I walked out of the office.
