Captain Levi could remember that day like it was yesterday, even though it was a year ago. He was sitting in his office, enjoying a relaxing cup of tea that would definitely keep him awake during every single piece of paperwork he had to grind though. He had finally finished counting down the casualties from the last expedition (Levi had this habit of counting the casualties of previous expeditions the night before recent expeditions), he had heard that knock on the door. That fateful knock.
"Come in," he said in his blank manner that he always carried around with him.
The creak of the wooden door being opened was heard throughout the office and candle-lit hallways as a relatively-small young woman in about her late 20s stepped into the office. She had ginger-colored hair that barely reached her shoulder, and eyes the color of sappy amber that comes out of trees. She wore a typical Survey Corps uniform that bore the Wings of Freedom crest of the back. Although she had tried to look serious, Levi could tell from the look on her face that she was nervous about something.
"Good evening, Captain," Petra Ral spoke with a firm manner. The manner of a soldier.
"Good evening, Petra," Levi replied.
"You're probably wondering why I'm here," Petra spoke, but her firm manner began to waver. Levi could feel it.
"Why are you here?"
"There's-there's" Petra stuttered.
"There's what??" Levi was starting to get a tad impatient, even though she only spoke a few words (he was a bit impatient at times).
Petra sighed and looked down at her boots, not bearing to look Levi in the eye.
"I have something to tell you," she spoke, her stutter finally gone.
"Is that so?" The captain arched an eyebrow as he looked at the young woman whom he hand-picked for his squad not-too-many years ago. Something was off about her. He knew it.
"Yes,"
"In that case, why don't you sit down," Levi gestured to an oak chair in front of his desk. Petra practically ran to the chair before sitting down, hands on her knees and eyes on her boots.
"What is it, Petra?" Levi spoke once again in the cold, blank manner, and he could've sworn he saw Petra blush, even just a bit.
"Er... Captain..." Petra stuttered once again as her body began to shake as if she were cold.
"Well?" He asked.
She remained silent and shaking, but after a deep breath, she looked the Captain in the eye and remained as firm as she could.
"Captain Levi, you see, tomorrow is the 57th expedition outside the walls," she said with a kind manner that, for some reason, reminded Levi of honey.
"Yes," The Captain said, raising his thin eyebrow at the young woman before him.
"And you know very well that when it comes to expeditions, you could die at any moment as you cross the Titans' territory," Petra said, a nervous look in her amber eyes.
"Of course," Levi was starting to get impatient. What did she have to say?
"Well, there's something I have to tell you, in case I die," Petra said, finally looking the Captain in the eye.
"Petra, don't you go saying stuff like tha-" Levi started, but was interrupted when Petra held her hand up, silencing him. They both knew it was rude to silence your superior officers, but for some reason, Levi didn't really care.
"Captain, I've admired you for a long time. And when you hand-picked me for your squad, I've never felt more happier in my life," her words sort of soften Levi, and he didn't know why. As she continued, his heart softened as the words left her mouth.
"And as I got to know you better, I began to admire you even more. Even with your cleaning obsession. Eventually, I began to have these feelings that were way more than admiration," Levi could feel his cheeks turn a light shade of pink.
"What are you saying, Petra?" Levi asked.
Petra took a deep breath and looked the Captain in the eye. She gave a little smile as those three fateful words escaped from her mouth.
"I love you,"
Levi's heart felt as if someone had given him a slap on the face. He never broke down, or did anything when someone would slap him. It would just cause a moment filled with shock. It wouldn't be long before he would soon rebound from the slap and things would go back to normal. For some reason, it didn't happen this time. This time, Levi felt as if his whole body malfunctioned. Muscles didn't move, and his brain was at the blankest state it was ever in.
Levi attempted to speak normally, however, when he spoke, his voice was as shaky as Petra's before her confession.
"What did you say to me?" Levi voice stuttered as if his tongue was partially stuck to the roof of his mouth.
"I love you," this time, Petra had no hesitation. In fact, Levi could have sworn that the corner of her lip had turned up a bit.
"That's all I needed to say, Captain," Petra got up from her seat and walked steadily to the door. Before closing it, she paused and looked back at the captain, whose face was no longer unreadable. You could tell that something had happened to the usually silent captain if you saw him.
Petra closed the door, leaving the captain in a state of the purest shock.
She-she loves me? Normally, girls telling Captain Levi of the Survey Corps didn't really make a difference to him. It was normal, honestly. If he wasn't on an expedition and he would take a trip to any town in Wall Rose, Levi would be met with a girl who would completely go head-over-heels crazy. Sure, it was annoying as hell, but he couldn't do anything about it, so he would just do what he always did... not care at all. But for some reason, Petra Ral was something else. Captain Levi had specifically chosen her for the Special Operations Squad (a.k.a. Squad Levi) because she had the skills that could completely slaughter a Titan, but there was something about her that made that Captain.... what did it make him feel? He didn't know, but over time, the girl's company made seemingly-emotionless Captain Levi feel a bit... happy inside.
As Levi layed in bed to rest up for the 57th Expedition, his mind wandered back to ginger-haired woman in his squad. How her eyes seemed to melt with any emotion, how her smile could brighten a room, how her words were as soft as honey. And all night, all the Captain would think of were the words that would become etched into his heart, mind, and soul.
I love you.
Author's Note
Hello, everyone. I would just like to tell you that this is literally the first ever fanfiction I am actually posting online, so please go easy on me. I highly encourage constructive criticism, by the way. I am definitely going to need it.
Here is some information I would like you to know:
"Shock" is the prologue story to a whole series of Attack on Titan fanfictions I am going to be writing called "Attack on Titan: The Next Generations". I was thinking about posting that one first, but if you really want to understand the series that has yet to come, than you oughta read this story first.
Also, this is a fanfiction. I am just saying that in case you angry with me in case I don't ship the ships you like. But if you do like the ships I like, and if you like my story in general, then you are more than welcome to stay. And those of you who ship Eren X Mikasa, I apologize, but I'm not a fan of that ship, as I see their relationship sibling-like. Sorry. Don't be rageful, but I ship Eren x Annie. We all have our opinions, and I happen to love Eren x Annie and I think it's a good ship (which is my personal opinion). You don't have to agree with me. Just thought I would tell you that.
Lastly, I don't own Attack on Titan. All rights go to Hajime Isayama.
Bye for now,
M.A.L. (TheBookGuardian290)
