The door was already open when the next girl walked in. She looked to be about my age. Her hair was short and dyed an unnaturally bright red color. Said red faded out to blue at the tips. Her eyes were blue and a small amount of freckles dotted her cheeks. She wore a blue jacket tipped with white fuzz along with red pants. She had black combat boots that went up to the middle of her ankles.
Man, she was cute...
The girl pulled a dagger from her sleeve and lunged for the ninja woman, the blade flashing at the ready. The woman jumped to the side and rolled away. The newcomer yanked the dagger out of the ground, as it had been lodged into the floor when she ran for the woman. The girl growled and jumped for the ninja. She pulled the dagger up her sleeve and jumped over the woman when the latter attempted to sweep her leg out to catch her unawares. The girl wrapped an arm around the ninja's throat. After a few moments of struggling, her body went limp and she slumped to the ground, unconscious and unmoving. The girl must have used some sort of choke hold or something along those lines.
The girl slowly walked over to me and took my hand. "Are you alright? Did she hurt you?" the girl asked. Her voice was demanding and somewhat motherly. My guess was that she had a few younger siblings at home and was used to taking care of them.
I shook my head. "No... But who in the world was that? What was she doing here?" I asked. Many more questions were swarming in my head, but I didn't want to worry the red and blue haired girl, so I kept most of them to myself.
"One of the Trelosa soldiers. They're an army that has been prepared by Hakate. I swear, this is all quite the mess... That woman is one of thousands. The Trelosa soldiers are found in practically endless supplies these days. It's surprising that there weren't any others found around this location," the girl explained to me. "She was here to do something with this statue." The girl turned to the large stone figure and brushed a hand on it. "Do you know who the statue paired itself with?"
I shook my head once more. "I would tell you if I knew what you were talking about."
The girl sighed. "There should have been an orb on this. Pink, if my assumptions are correct. Who did the pink orb fuse with when you discovered this statue?"
I looked down at my hands. Her gaze was getting more and more intense and I didn't think I really wanted to continue to meet her eyes. "I guess me," I said with a small shrug. "I came in here and started messing around with the statue and then, out of pretty much nowhere, the pink ball thing left the statue and flew at me."
The girl frowned and turned to the large machine nearby. "Must have been draining its power... It wouldn't be the first time." She raised her leg and lashed it out at the machine. It shattered and crumbled under her weight. She sure was a strong type... "There. Much better."
"I don't believe I caught your name," I piped in, tapping her on the shoulder.
The girl kicked the machine a few more times for good measure and turned to meet my eyes once again. "My name is Celina Nilsson. I'm one of the people like you in this world. One of the fifteen total people, as far as I can tell."
"Well... I don't know what you mean by the fifteen total people thing, but I guess I'll tell you my name too. I'm Renee Asami. It's nice to meet you, Celina," I told her, forcing a small smile.
"What do you know of magic, Renee?" Celina asked me. "You have to know at least something."
"I know that it's all in fairy tales and that it doesn't really exist, if that counts," I murmured.
Celina sighed. "You weren't raised like I was, apparently... Well, there's magic in the world. It's real. Magic comes in many different forms, but the most important are the Pure Strain and the Artificial Strain. Artificial things are found in all sorts of places. Most of the time, it comes about when magic is a recessive gene and it hides for a few generations before making an appearance. This also includes magic that isn't created normally. Magic created with machines is also Artificial.
"The Pure stuff is what we care about right now. There are fifteen Pure Strain mages in the world as of right now, each one female since Pure magic can only survive in female bodies. The two of us are two out of the fifteen. The Trelosa soldier that just came in here is one of the Artificials, and since Artificials are always after Pure magic so that they can become Pure themselves, she was trying to kill you. The killer of a Pure mage automatically receives Pure magic, which is what she was trying to do."
I held my head in one hand. "I'm so confused. Artificial? Pure? Magic can't be real. This has to be some sort of prank."
Celina sighed and spread her arms wide. Daggers appeared in an arch above her head, each one sharp and pointy and ready to poke out a few organs of mine. I took a step back. "Do you still believe it's just a prank?" she asked me.
I shook my head slowly. "I guess not," I found myself murmuring. I looked up once more. "So... You're trying to say that I'm in danger or something since I have Pure magic?"
Celina nodded. "Yep. Right now, our job is to find the other Pure mages and put a stop to Trelosa and their leader, Hakate. Are you in?"
I slowly nodded. I didn't really see a choice. "I suppose so."
