Chapter Two

I was sent stumbling backwards after realizing that something was wrong. I stared at my finger in shock, not sure of what else to do. This couldn't be happening. This didn't happen in the real world. The stories of fairies and dragons and mermaids and princesses were long gone from my life. These sorts of things only happened in those tales. Not in real life. What in the world was going on?

I didn't run back to the house to tell Mom about it, shockingly enough. I couldn't do something like that. She would ask what had happened, and if I told her that it was because I had tried to get into the basement, I was done for. I'd be grounded for the rest of my life. I'd never get to leave this house again, all because I did something as ridiculous as try to get into the stupid basement.

I rubbed my finger on the skirt of my kimono before observing it once more. The area where I had cut it was still tender. I poked at it with my other hand. Ow. That hurt.

Allowing my kimono sleeve to cover my finger, I walked forward to the statue that stood majestically before me. The pink orb in the center seemed to get a little bit brighter when I neared it, but I figured that was just my imagination. I shook my head to rid myself of the thought and then turned to the machines.

They were pulsing with that weird blue light I mentioned before. I stretched out, positioning myself so I was standing on my toes, and grabbed one of the wires hooked up to the statue. I mentally cursed myself for being so short, but I forgot all about said curse when I returned to the task at hand: staring at the wire.

Before I knew it, I had ripped the wire from its place on the machine. It clattered down to the ground, still attached to the pink orb at the center of the statue. Electricity crackled and sparked from the inside of the cord.

I picked up the wire once the sparking came to a pause and looked at it. I was no genius with computers. I barely knew how to operate one. Giant machines hooked up to magical looking statues were even worse. I was absolutely clueless.

As far as I could tell, my assumption about the wires draining the power from the sphere on the statue was a correct thought. I didn't see how it could be anything but correct, truth be told. What else would those wires be doing if they weren't sapping the power out of that odd pink energy ball?

I turned the wire over in my fingers. Maybe I could stop the sapping of the orb's power if I yanked out the other cables. I didn't really know what made me think that I should do that, but I didn't really mind at that moment in time.

The wire dropped from my fingers as I walked over to the next cord. I got up onto my toes once more and yanked the cable down from its high and mighty position. Even more electricity flew from the detached wire this time around. I dropped it in the blink of an eye so that I wouldn't get shocked by the white hot light that left the wire.

I backed away from that wire and went onto the next one. There were three more after the two that I had pulled down. These were a little bit lower than the first two, so it would be way easier to pull them down. After I pulled down the third wire, I stepped away from it. No electricity left this wire, which I was thankful for. I was hating this electricity sparky thing a whole lot.

The next two wires went crashing down to the ground with shocking ease. After all the wires were down, the large machine whirred and complained before going silent. All its lights went off and the sounds fell into quiet. The only thing I could hear was my own breathing. I had expected something to happen. When nothing did, I was a little bit disappointed.

I approached the pink sphere. Its glow was returning. The light that emanated from it was practically blinding by this point, but I didn't really mind. I had tough eyes that could take this sort of light.

Glaring into the middle of the inferno, I squinted and cupped a hand over my eyes. I needed to see if something was happening with that sphere. I had a gut feeling that something was going on. I just didn't know what.

The pink sphere floated away from its high and mighty perch in the hands of the statue. I watched the light surrounding it go dimmer as it made its way over towards me. I watched the orb, as if hypnotized to stare at its shine.

I didn't even flinch when the orb hit my chest, disappearing inside of me. I looked at my finger when I felt it tingle. The spot where I had pricked it had healed over completely. It was as if nothing had happened in the first place. I even rubbed it and felt nothing. Absolutely nothing.

Before I could gasp in shock and glance around in confusion, I heard the door fly open. I cried out in shock and saw a person standing in the doorway. Strangely enough, it wasn't my mother, which was a blessing, I suppose.

It was a woman dressed in all black. She looked sort of like a ninja. A mask was over her face. It was a white color with a red pattern that showed twelve circles surrounding three other circles, which were around a large one in the center. Her hair was dark and tied up in a neat bun. A sword was in a red sheath that was strapped to her back.

The woman pulled out her sword and pointed it at me. "Prepare to die," she hissed, her voice cold and dark.

And then, she appeared.
