About fifteen minutes passed before there was any sort of change in the aura of Viveca's room. I was sitting on her bed for most of it, a frown on my lips. Nobody was saying a word. My guess is that we were all thinking about different aspects of the same thing.
Well, person was probably a much more accurate word to describe the subject.
Thoughts of Finley ran through my mind, leaving me frowning. I had been doing so for quite some time now. I wanted to know why Finley had attacked us. No matter what he said to us, I knew that he was hiding at least one thing about his past. Even a seven year old child would be able to see that. The only problem, though, was that we had no idea what sort of things he could be keeping secret. It's not like he was going to answer us no matter what we said to him, anyways. I got the feeling that he was one of the more stubborn people I was going to meet while I was still living out my time on earth.
Soon, a small group of figures came out of the rift that Celina had forged before we went searching. Most were people I recognized, otherwise known as Corinne, Arianna, and Viveca, but there was one that I found to be unfamiliar.
As I expected, it was a girl. She looked to be about our age. Her skin was dark and shone gently in the overhead lights. Her hair was dark brown and puffed up into an afro hairstyle. She had a pink dress on, which looked like it was made from rather fancy material. A belt made up of teal silk was wrapped around her waist. The same teal silk made up a headband that tied in the front of her forehead.
The girl's dark eyes met mine. "Who might you be?" she asked. Her voice was deep, but it was soothing at the same time. When I looked at her, I felt like she was going to be the motherly type that took time to care for us all as we went through life on this dangerous quest.
"My name is Renee," I responded. "Since my guess is that you already know Ari, Cor, and Viv, I'll just show you the others." I gestured to Celina, Grace, Kidani, and Trina as I spoke next. "These are some of our friends. Celina, Grace, Kidani, and Trina. It's a pleasure to meet you, Ms...?"
"Selix," the girl replied. "Selix Balewa. It's a pleasure to meet you as well, Renee." She bowed over gently, which did nothing but make her look even more regal than she already did in all of that fancy fabric. I had to admit that I was a little bit overwhelmed by her presence.
"Selix is the Pure mage of Mind," Arianna explained. "Things like telepathy and telekinesis are her specialties."
Selix nodded to me, as if to assure me that what Arianna was saying was the truth. "Yes," she explained. "That would be correct."
A frown appeared on Grace's lips. "You know what I'm a little bit bothered by?" she asked of us, crossing her arms as she spoke.
"What is it?" I questioned of her, turning to meet her eyes.
"None of us have been speaking English this entire time," Grace said. "We've all been talking in some sort of foreign language. I can't be the only one that's noticed something like that, right?"
Celina nodded. "I guess that I'll have to explain that to you," she said. "Since we all come from different countries, we normally wouldn't be able to communicate unless one of us was specially trained in one or more languages. To fix this problem, the first mages declared that when discussing among one another, mages would speak in one base language whether they intended it or not. They always speak in Latin."
"I sang Latin one time. I hated every second of it," Grace muttered, shaking her head to herself. "I never would have imagined that I can speak it so fluently, and with no special training at all. I feel really cool now..."
"I guess that it's just how magic works," Celina said simply. She looked around the room, counting us all up. "Renee, Arianna, Viveca, Corinne, Trina, Grace, Selix, Kidani, me... That makes nine, I believe, unless I miscounted somewhere."
"Why is that relevant?" Corinne asked with a small frown.
"I know that there are twelve base mages and three special ones. I would know it if one of us was a special, so we're nine of the base mages," she said. "If we want to stop Hakate, we're going to need the rest of the base mages."
"So we're going to have to split up and search again, right?" I asked with a small frown. As much as I hated to admit it, I strongly disliked the idea of splitting up. We could fight so much better when we were together."
"I don't think that's a good idea, actually," Celina told us. "Instead, I think that we should stay together for the time being."
"Um... Okay," I said. I had been really expecting her to tell us to split up, so hearing her say something else came as a bit of a shock.
"While we were getting Grace and Kidani, we were attacked by a Trelosa soldier. This means that Hakate is going to look for chances when we're alone so that she can strike us down. It would be best for us to stay together to avoid being caught by her," Celina explained.
"Okay... That sounds like a good idea," nodded Arianna.
"Are we going to go and pick up team members now?" I asked Celina.
She shook her head. "We're going to eat first. I can tell that at least one of us is hungry," she replied. "Hopefully we'll be able to find a place that we can all eat at and agree on... That's one of the complications with getting people from so many different countries, but we should be able to handle it."
