The walk to the beach took up about fifteen minutes. All that I had learned up until this point swarmed around in my head. Artificial and Pure Strains were the two types of magic. There were fifteen Pures at once, and if a Pure was killed by an Artificial, the Artificial would gain the Pure's magic. There were also three tiers of power, though I didn't know much about it. Also, teleportation and reaching through with magic that goes to the world of the Dimensional Shadows, which exist to take over the lives of people that resided in the main dimension.
To say the least, it took me a while to get through it all and not get confused.
The beach came to us all too quickly. I slipped off my sandals and pulled up my kimono. I waded into the water until it sloshed around my ankles. I looked down at the water with a smile. I hadn't been to the beach since I was a child. Standing here brought many pleasant memories washing back into my mind. I closed my eyes peacefully, thinking of all that I had seen on beachside shores back when I was a child...
My thoughts were rudely interrupted when water splashed onto my face. I gasped as my hair went heavy from being drenched. I opened my eyes and ran back to the sand as quickly as possible. Sand was sticking to my feet since they were wet.
My entire kimono was drenched. I felt fury and unhappiness bubble up from my core. I glared out at the water, trying to see what had happened to make me end up so wet.
My eyes soon fell on the girl that we had seen. Her hair was blonde, lengthy, and curly. Her eyes were brown and full of mischief. She currently wore a red bikini and rode atop a surfboard that she was paddling to shore. "Sorry about that," she said, a tired smile on her face. "I get a little wrapped up when I surf." Her Australian accent was heavy. It was almost a struggle to understand her.
The girl tilted her head and stared at me, eyes going narrow. "Who even are you two? I know everybody in this town and I've never seen either one of you anywhere."
"My name is Renee and this is Celina," I began. "We need to talk to you, miss...?"
"Corinne. Corinne Walsh," the girl replied. She got off of her surfboard and rose to her feet. She picked up the board and held it next to her drenched body. "You two sure are dressed weirdly. A fuzzy coat and kimono? In Australia? Seriously?"
I sighed. "It's a long story," I told her. "Celina would probably be more suited to explain it than I would..."
Celina took a step forward. "Ah, yes. The lengthy conversation in which I tell you that magic exists."
Corinne shrugged. "No need. I already know this crap. Chill before you go on a tangent."
Celina paused, her face going blank in confusion. "You know?" she asked. "I thought I would be the only one who knew this stuff."
Corinne shook her head. "Nah. My parents took me to a huge statue a while back and explained our family history. You know... The whole magic thing." Corinne snapped her fingers and stared for a few moments. In the blink of an eye, a small spark had appeared. It soon after blossomed into something larger. Moments later, a flame was burning in her hand, sending thin streaks of smoke flying upwards towards the sky blue sky of Australia.
I smiled and began to clap my hands. "That's so cool!" I cried out. I could see why Celina was thinking of her as dangerous. Fire was a deadly tool if it wasn't used in the right hands.
"You've seen my fancy stuff. Now, tell me what you two can do," Corinne said, her eyes lighting up from her eagerness.
Celina pulled out her dagger. "Weapons and other things are my specialty," she told Corinne. "As for Renee, we aren't all that sure. Magic takes 48 hours to transfer from one of the orbs of power into a human body. Since it hasn't yet been 48 hours, we're left to wait and see what sort of power you might possess."
I frowned and sighed. "Of course it takes 48 hours... I was hoping for something that came along instantly and changed everything right then and there, but I guess that this couldn't be helped."
"Nah. It's fine. I thought it was pretty lame that it didn't work at first too, but after those 48 hours are up, it all seems worth it," Corinne told me.
"Why aren't we just born with the magic? If we're Pure mages, then it seems like we would just automatically have it at birth," I said with a frown.
Celina shook her head. "Not exactly. We retain a small amount of our power when we're born, but most of it goes to the statue that has the same power that we do. An orb grows for sixteen years until our birthday comes along. Then, we get our magic transferred anytime that we touch the orb after that date. Another side effect is that our blood changes colors. The colors depend on which type of magic you have. Fire, for example, means a scarlet color, which isn't much different from the usual color," Celina explained.
"Well, if magic types can be determined by blood color, then I guess that I can go on and tell you what color mine was," I said with a shrug. "I pricked my finger this morning and discovered that it had turned pink."
Celina let a small smile creep onto her face. "I suppose that decides it then. You're going to be the leader of our Pure mage army."
I frowned. "What do you mean?"
"Pink blood means the power of legend, which is the most powerful magic on the highest tier," Celina explained. "I'm curious as to how you'll lead us into battle, Ms. Leader."
