‘Did you miss him when he was in Landsberg?’ vraagt Rose.

‘I missed him a lot. He has always been a special person to me, I might say he was my best friend, and I did not see him for three years.’ antwoord Tommy.

‘We also have a message from him to Vivian.’ zegt Kristi. ‘Can we play that?’

‘Of course.’ Tommy pakt de opname en stopt hem in de speler.

Dan klinkt opnieuw de stem van Johnny door de kamer.

‘Hello Vivian, how’s my sweetheart? Yours is all right, but he’s lost for you as usual. I’m always lost for you, Viv. This isn’t quite the same as being with you, honey, but maybe I can tell some things I want to. The most important thing, I guess, is that I love you. I do Vivian, I love you very much. I love you more than anything in the world. It won’t be long now, honey, and we’ll be together for life. We won’t be counting the days much longer angel, we’ll be together soon. Just keep those precious letters coming till we are sweetheart, they mean so much to me over here. I’ll be writing every day too. Just keep your chin up and say your prayers Viv. The way we love each other it won’t seem like us along. Our hearts will be together, even though we’re actually not. Just stay my girl, always, and keep on lovin’ me. You’re my life Viv, you’re my everything to me. You take care of yourself till I can be back to take care of you. Tell ‘em all this gal is already taken. Okay sweetheart? You remember that, baby. You stay sweet, stay mine always...okay? I’ll be thinking of you till we’re together again honey, and I’ll never stop loving you, as long as I live, I’ll never stop loving you. I love you baby.’

Iedereen is doodstil, en duidelijk ontroerd. Tommy heeft tranen in zijn ogen staan.

‘This is so beautiful.’ zegt hij. ‘I have never heard this recording.’

‘He really loved her.’ zegt Dan.

Tommy gaat naar de keuken en droogt zijn ogen. Dan gaat hij weer zitten.

‘Have you any idea in which case you have to prove his innocence?’

‘We have a feeling it might be his drugs case.’ zegt Dominic.

‘What do you think of his drug addiction?’ vraagt Rose.

‘Well, he started with them after he left Dyess, so I did not see him taking that shit, but when I saw him, you could clearly see he was high.’ begint Tommy.

‘But actually it weren’t drugs, you know. It were medicines, that he had to take, but he took to much and that’s why he got addicted.’ vervolgt hij.

‘It were medicines?’ vraagt Dan. ‘How could he get convicted of drug trafficking?’

‘Because nobody believed he it were his medicines. He did not get any documents, but the pills he took were legal back then.’ zegt Tommy. ‘He would get them from a local doctor, because the rules weren’t really there in the fifties.’

‘Has he been in jail?’ vraag ik.

‘Yes he has, but only a few days because he earned the right to be setted free because he was a public person.’ antwoordt Tommy.

‘That is great.’ zegt Dan. ‘Do you have the feeling the drugs influenced his life?’

‘Yes they did. He got dependent of them, and he behaved different when he had them. When I asked him about it, he made me believe he was tired, and that was why he behaved like that. Our whole family knew he was on drugs, but when either me or other family members said something about it, he played it off like we had gone crazy.’ antwoord hij.
