The base that Alex and his team brought me too was more then what I expected. Many stealth jets lined the runway to take off at a moments notice. Soldiers stood guard every entrance and opening there was, checking every truck, person or anything that went in and out of the base. I've never seen so many refugees in one place. Still, trucks were bringing in the wounded, the dead or any survivors they could. With a good 1/3 of the city reduced to nothing but rubble, the carnage was the worst there.

I had been bedridden for 2 weeks and I honestly hated it. Doctors always on bedside checking the machines, the medication and a gauge that had my power levels in check. It only had been a few days since Alex had brought me the small vial containing my father's ashes. I'd held it tight every night as I silently cried myself to sleep, wishing I'd done something before he was shot. Doctors still couldn't figure out if my powers were genetic or formed with the gas that was dropped a few days before the attack. From what they said if this other beat hadn't started I would be dead. I was glad to be alive. In pain but alive.

To fix the damage that had been done by the gashes the doctors had to put me under. To be honest It had been the best sleep I've gotten the entire week. When I woke up they showed me what they had pulled out. Three bullets, one was melted to my left hip bone, the other had random patterns that resembled lightning bolts.

Even after I was healing they taught me basic self-defense and taught me to control my anger for my powers. this place felt like home now I had nowhere else to go. To me, home was a city reduced to nothing but rubble. I noticed more soldiers came down to help the cause of the war ending, but we all knew it wasn't ending anytime soon. The war got more bloody with each passing week, I was surprised to find out that the gas that was dropped over our head only months before hasn't been dropped yet but will be soon. Our men couldn't find any trace of the gas. no chemical trace, like it, completely vanished. still, we expected it to drop again from what our intel said.

I looked outside the cafeteria window. Today it was cold and rainy. I watched as the lightning bolts danced around in the sky begging me to join them. My heart ached at them. I wanted to go outside in the rain. Alex sadly had locked all the doors because of enemy patrols getting too close to the hydro field keeping us hidden.

Sage, one of Alex's techie's sat across from me looking down at the chessboard in front of us. Once he made his move I made mine. Moving a piece where he was stuck and couldn't jump over. He started to look worried at my constant looking out the window at the storm.

" Lryia are you okay?" Sage asked

I shrugged " It been almost 3 weeks since the last drop...still our chemist has found nothing, no chemical trace.."

sage sighed " where all wondering those answers too."

I looked back down at the game board and jumped his last piece  "I win"

" this is utter bullshit" he sat back in his chair and started to pout.

Jay walked over " she's one of our best...Sage, how can she not win?"

We both laughed as Sage handed over a 20 dollar bill. We continued to laugh at the fact Sage kept throwing a fit about losing a chess match. It was all cut short. I saw a small round ball roll into the room, the cap flew off. I had grabbed Sage off his chair and pushed him down on the ground as the smoke bomb went off.  I cringed at the smell. Clearly homemade.
