27 - only fools fall for you

Nancy drives us to the police station, but no one's there.

Suddenly Chief Hopper's office door opens, and someone that isn't Chief Hopper walks out, and someone pulls Nancy away from me, and grips onto both of my hands.

I squirm, but something cold touches my temple.

'Don't shoot him!' Nancy yells.

'We need answers, Michael,' Dr Brenner says. 'Fast.'

'I won't tell you anything!' I shout at him, spitting.

I hear a deafeningly loud click next to my ear, and Nancy starts screaming. I stop moving, praying not to get shot.

'What do you want from me?' I ask, taking a deep breath.

'We want to know how she came back to you,' he says.

'I don't know. Mom had her on our doorstep when I came home one night and that was the first time I had seen her in a year,' I say, my eyes brimming with tears.

'Suck it up, you baby,' says a tall, buff man in the corner. 'Eleven's dead.'

I stare at him, and a tear rolls down my cheek.

'Can you let me go? My day's been bad enough,' I say.

Dr Brenner shakes his head, and I can feel the gun still firmly pressed to my forehead.

I take another deep breath. 'Why?'

'You know too much. We can't let you go.'

I pull away and run at Dr Brenner. I feel a tight grip on my wrist before I can move even a foot forward, and I can hear the sound of what feels like hundreds of guns loading.

'Let me go,' I say.

'No,' they all say in unison.

'Let Nancy go,' I say firmly.

'Mike, I'm staying with you, wherever you go,' Nancy says.

'No, Nancy. If you loved me, you'd go.' She starts sobbing, and I stare at Dr Brenner. 'Go on, then. Let. Her. Go.'

He signals to the men holding Nancy, and they haul her out of the station, and Nancy bangs on the window, her eyes watery and red.

Dr Brenner stares at me relentlessly.

'What now? What are you gonna do?' I ask.

He steps forward. 'You have two options, kid. Either you live or you die.'

I stare at Nancy, and she shakes her head, her face red and her nose running.

I look back at Dr Brenner.

The same words rush through my head.

Only fools think it'll go back to normal when you're gone.

Only fools think it's gonna be okay when you come back.

Only fools fall for you, Eleven.

'Shoot me,' I say.

I hear a loud gunshot in my ear, then screams from outside.

The last thing I see is everything going blurry, and falling.

I fall, one last time.
