i first saw you sitting

in the middle of a playground,

children aimlessly running around.

you seemed so captivated by them,

by their unimaginable constant happiness.

your hair flowed in the wind, whipping every which way,

occasionally you would flick a rogue strand that had fallen into your eyes.

your eyes stared right through the children;

dead, dull, sleepless eyes.

but a beautiful smile adorned your face

as you laughed at the childish innocence of those around you.

i caught your eye once,

your cheeks rosy

as you quickly averted your attention.

suddenly, your eyes widened when a child fell

scraping his knee.

in an instant you sprang up,

held him,

until the tears had disappeared.

that's when I worked up the courage to talk to you.

I sat down right next to you and said,

"why do you watch the children?"

you dropped your head down,

hair cascading around your delicate features.

you didn't answer.

and i didn't ask you again.

but you spoke up, saying,

"why do you watch me?"

I was speechless.

you had noticed me,

everyday,

watching you.

I didn't answer.

"we're even now," you said

"we both asked a question that the other is not willing to supply an answer to."

and right then I knew that had captured me in your beautiful words

and beautiful thoughts.

we didn't talk anymore that day,

we just sat.

until you left

leaving me wonderless.
