Ethan -

The rest of that night was a blur.  Akihito insisted we leave that night. Basel had sent some back-up in just in case but they proved unnecessary.

We were able to find one of Ian's pack members in the woods right outside his territory and got information out of him.

Ian had beaten Ren half to death and left him next a half frozen creek to die.

When we finally found him, he was laying in a ball on the damp riverbank in a thin white bloody robe. He was covered in blood and bruises. It was hard not to notice the blood there.

At first glance, anyone would have thought he was an abandoned corpse. Akihito ran up next to him and desperately searched for a pulse.

At first the air was dead still and I assumed the worst.

Suddenly Akihito ripped off his black coat and wrapped his thin body with it. Akihito was tall enough to where the coat hung off Ren's feet.

We practically ran all the way back to the clinic without stopping.

Basel took Ren into a room and had me and Akihito wait outside.

Noah was still there, asleep on two chairs with his jacket over the gap.

"You mentioned before Ren as an omega." Akihito said looking both physically and emotionally exhausted. Back when he checked Ren's pulse by the creek, it was dark but I could slightly make out the gleam of tears on his face.

"You didn't know?" I asked.

"When I left Ren, he was about to turn five." There was a moment of silence.

"Can I ask why you left him?"

Akihito didn't say anything for a bit so I assumed he didn't want to talk about it but soon enough he started talking.

"Our dad was abusive. Our mother only ever stood there and watched as he would take his anger out on me when taking a break from her. I always tolerated it because if he hurt me, he wouldn't hurt Ren. Once she died from an overdose, there was one less income and his anger spread over to Ren."

He took a second to breathe.

"One day I came home and found Ren laying naked on his bed with welts from a belt on his back. I grabbed some of our clothes and ran away with him. I thought we would be fine with my job but that man managed to get the police to come after us after accusing me of stealing money from him. Despite everything, Ren would still smile every time I would get back from looking for a job. Despite the pain of the blistering wounds, he would stick to my side every night and tell me about the bugs he found by the window sill and their families. He was my only light and I-" His voice began to shake.

"When the money ran out, I couldn't let him starve so I took him to a couple I knew through a friend. I had originally asked Basel but, I was scared he would use his connections at the hospital to bring me back to that man. Ren screamed and kicked and begged me not to go and the only thing I could tell him was that I would be back soon. The last promise I made to him and I broke it." He quickly wiped his eyes and looked away.

"Why did you only come back until now?"

"I did a lot of not so good things to get myself through. Some of those included angering certain individuals, including Ian. I couldn't let Ren get involved but in the end, me not coming back ended up being the worst thing I could have done."

"Why are you here now?"

"I ended up befriending some old sailor who helped me out during a drunk bar fight. Long story short, he found out his most recent of eight wives was cheating right before he died and left me a generous amount of inheritance in place of her. I resolved most of my conflicts with that money, used the knowledge that man gave me about stocks to create a stable income and was ready to finally take Ren back but....well you know the rest."
