A few weeks have passed and by now Ren had become very weak. He still insisted on doing things himself but became winded very easily and would often times sleep either in the room or on the couch. Although he couldn't leave the house, he felt uncomfortable laying down for extended periods of times so he would at times just walk from the room to the living room or to the kitchen to do some mindless task like sorting the coffee table books or organizing the kitchen utensils.
On certain days - and more recently frequent days-, however, he barely had the energy to walk to the bathroom. He would lay in bed sluggishly drifting in and out of sleep. His appetite dwindled bit by bit until he could barely stand eating a few slices of fruit.
His complexion hid nothing with his skin pale and sunken eyes. I tried to keep things from stressing him but every time Ian tried to rile things up and picked fights, Ren only became more and more anxious.
I arrived at the house after stopping by the restaurant to see how things were running. The house itself was completely quiet. In the living room I found Emily sleeping on the couch. I wasn't surprised. With everyone busy, Emily volunteered to keep an eye on Ren at all times but because Ren has been so restless lately, it likely rubbed off on her.
I quietly stepped past her and headed upstairs to the room. Once inside, I found Ren curled up in a ball of countless blankets and pillows with some having fallen onto the floor. The TV was on but the volume was very low on some news station. The only light on was the bedside lamp. On the bed Ren laid hugging a pillow in his arms and one between his legs.
As soon as I opened the door I saw his head tilt towards me. His expression was half asleep as if he had just woken up with his bed head very pronounced.
"Did I wake you?" I whispered. He shook his head slightly before adjusting the pillow under him. I went over and sat next to him on the side of the bed and ran hand through his disheveled hair.
"Do you feel alright?" I noticed his forehead was damp with sweat which might have just been all the blankets.
"...Yea...just a little nauseous." He said softly.
"What have you eaten today?"
"Yogurt."
"That's it?" He nodded. I tried not to sound too scolding but it was admittedly frustrating. Ren had been losing so much weight by the day. He needed all the energy he could get for the baby but at this point he was beginning to look just like when he first arrived. I couldn't blame Emily since I knew she had been trying to get him to eat but it was no use.
"I'll get you something eat right now." I was about to stand but his hand reached out and clutched weakly onto mine.
"Don't leave..." I assumed he thought I was going out.
"I'm just going to the kitchen. I'll be back in a minute." He let go but still looked a bit down.
I went downstairs and heated up some rice porridge I brought from the restaurant and poured a glass of apple juice. When I came back to the room, Ren had sat himself up a bit. I placed the juice on the nightstand and brought the bowl up in front of him.
"Try to eat as much as you can." I said as I brought a spoonful up to his mouth. Ren took a reluctant bite and I waited until he swallowed to give him another.
"I can feed myself."
"Just eat." He took another bite. He didn't seem to enjoy it but he had to eat. If I let him eat himself he would put the plate aside and say he will finish it later.
Ren got to about half before refusing to eat anymore. I wasn't happy about how little it was but it was better than nothing and I couldn't force him.
I handed him the juice and had him take a few sips in hopes of the sweetness being more palatable. He drank a good third before handing it back.
"Do you want me to get you anything else?"
Ren shook his head. I noticed his cheeks were a bit red. I felt his forehead to make sure he didn't have a fever. He was warm but just from having woken up awhile ago.
"If you're not going to eat anymore, why don't we try to sleep?"
Ren nodded and I began trying to organize the blankets and pillows to make it comfortable to sleep - mostly just moving them to Ren's side.
I laid back on the bed and Ren shuffled up next to me. I turned to face him although his head was down on chest.
I wanted to talk to him more but didn't want to tire him out. I smoothed out his hair as his eyes slowly closed.
I laid next to him deep in my thoughts. Looking at his helpless face, I couldn't help but wonder if this was all worth it. I didn't know how much more of this he could handle. He was constantly in pain and getting weaker by the second. I wanted to just make it better but was so helpless to do anything. I know he already made this decision but what if he ends up...
My heart sank at that thought. I didn't know what to do anymore.
Ren's eyes suddenly fluttered open. He glanced up at me with saddened eyes.
"What is it?" I asked softly.
"I...I'm sorry." He hushed.
"Why are you apologizing?"
"I've troubled you so much. I-I'm sorry. I know it's also hard on you a-and...I think maybe I shouldn't have gone through..." His voice was shaking slightly.
"Don't say that." I pulled him closer up to me.
Looks like he had read my expression before.
"What you decided was the right choice. This child is ours and as hard as it is now, he will be born. None of this is your fault."
I held him in my arms and grazed his cheek. He still seemed troubled so I pressed him into my shoulder with my arm.
"Everything will be okay. Everything will be okay..." I hummed as I stroked his hair.
Before he could close his eyes, a loud bang was heard from downstairs that caused both of us to jump.
Once I heard loud footsteps and Basel's voice, I realized he had suddenly showed up.
"I'll be right back. I'm going to see what he wants." I told Ren with a kiss to his forehead before setting him back onto the bed.
Glancing at his expression, I realized he was worried but all I could do was give him a reassuring smile before leaving.
I hurried downstairs to where Basel stood with three other pack members I recognized as well as Logan and Noah.
"We're going to attack. Tomorrow night."
