Chapter Thirty

Ethan -

The next two hours were some of the most difficult Akihito and I had to tolerate.

You could tell they tried to muffled Ren's screams with a towel for him to bite but he was in too much pain to let that stop him.

Minute after hour of ear piercing screams. So many times I wanted to rush in and stop them but I knew it would be useless. Occasionally the screams would stop, implying Ren had passed out but would start again soon. As time passed, they turned to cries and pleas but we were helpless to just listen.

After about an hour, Basel suddenly barged in carrying a case. They had arrived with the drugs. I was never so happy to see him in my life.

About ten minutes after he went in, the cries quiet down for a bit but were still audible. The last twenty minutes or so became the loudest as both Rebecca and Emily urged him to push.

With one last scream, I finally heard a new cry from someone else replace Ren's. I immediately wanted to run inside but had to wait until Emily let us in. She came out but told us to wait until they stabilize and clean up the two.

"You can come in now." Emily finally came out.

Akihito and I went ahead to see Ren wrapped up in a blanket with a tiny bundle in his arms.

Rebecca stood next to him to help him support the bundle. Ren looked absolutely exhausted, taking quick, short, ragged breaths. His whole body looked to be damp in sweat and his face was brightly flushed and stained with tears. Still, he managed to make out a smile at the sight of us.

"Look, dad and uncle are here to meet you." He whispered.

I went up next to him to see the new arrival with Akihito close behind.

In Ren's arms, the tiny infant slept peacefully among the fleece blankets. His midnight hair contrasted his blushed skin. Despite having just been born among all this chaos, seeing him snuggled up to Ren's chest created a sense of comfort in the small space.

I looked up at Ren and laughed with joy. He smiled brightly despite all the pain he just went through.

"You did so well." I said and kissed Ren's forehead.

"Hello there little guy." I greeted the bundle. Ren lifted him slightly to imply I carry him.

I took the bundle into my arms and he stirred slightly, flinching at the cold.

"It's best you hold him. You're much warmer." Ren breathed softly.

"Speaking of which, wrap yourself in these as well. You lost a lot of blood earlier so you'll feel a bit cold. Not to mention the painkillers." Rebecca laid another blanket on Ren's shoulders.

Ren didn't really respond and just looked up dazed at me.

"He's going to be pretty out of it for the next few hours so just ignore any nonsense he talks about."

"Is the baby alright?"

"Yeah, looks like a healthy baby boy to me."

"Ethan..." Ren breathed. He seemed to be growing more listless.

"Ren? Can you hear me?" Rebecca asked while motioning a nurse towards some device.

Meanwhile, Ren looked up at her after about a few seconds. It was like he was about to pass out.

"Is he alright?" I asked.

"Akihito sit over here. We are probably going to have to transfer some blood." Rebecca said looking at the nurse who hook Ren's arms to a device that seemed to confirm Rebecca's suspicion.

Akihito was soon hooked up and directly transferring blood into Ren. Little by little he seemed to regain color and looked up at me once more.

"I'm so...tired..."

"Ren?"

"It's alright. Let him sleep. His vitals are normal now so he's just catching up to the exhaustion."

As if on command, Ren closed his eyes slowly and fell asleep immediately. Rebecca pulled a blanket over him as the other nurse unhooked the two from the machine.

"We'll be heading back in the morning so let him rest tonight. You can stay here with the baby. He'll just need to be fed and it's better for you to do it." She said.

"I'll stay too. It'll be hard to stay up all night with these two." Akihito said

"Thanks for the help. I'll go help out the others but call for me if anything. We already prepared a bottle so I'll send Emily in to help out." Rebecca said before stepping out.
