Chapter Twenty-Two

Ren -

Aki had to leave to take care of things from the fire. Luckily, most of his important files were on his laptop he had in his car but obviously he still lost some paperwork and needed to file an insurance claim for all his things.

Because of that, he left me with Ethan who took me back to the main house. Both Logan and Noah were home but were just playing some video games. I guess they knew about the situation but by then figured everything was sorted out.

Ethan and I went into his room where he let me take a quick shower to clean off all the soot and a fresh set of clothes to sleep in.

It's been awhile since I've slept in his bed and felt an overwhelming sense of comfort. His smell on the linen sheets was so pleasant, my previous troubles sleeping seemed to have been cured.

Ethan took awhile to come to bed. He had only come back into the room to make sure I had gotten out of the shower and changed just fine before heading back to his study.

I laid back fiddled with the bedsheets impatiently waiting for him to come back.

When the door finally opened, Ethan walked in with a concerned look.

"Is everything alright?" I asked.

"Yeah, don't worry about it."

"But, you look worried." I insisted.

Ethan sighed and stayed silent for a bit.

"Is it Ian?"

"Listen, it's not something you should think about right now. You just focus on the baby and yourself, okay?"

"But what about you? I can't be that carefree seeing you like this. Please, you'll worry me more by not telling me."

"It's just, with you here, it's risky. Ian is already riled up and if he finds out you are so close, he might want to attack."

I clutched the sheets and looked down. He was right. Me being here was putting everyone here in danger.

"I already called Basel to set up a defense plan if he tries anything."

"But, maybe I should go somewhere else...."

"Even if you do, Ian will still persist. Look at the apartment. Ian wasn't supposed to know you were staying there with Aki."

"Yeah..."

"Don't worry about that right now. Go to sleep. We'll talk more in the morning."

"Are you not coming to bed?"

"I'll sleep on the couch."

"...You can sleep here. It's your bed anyways."

"Alright." Ethan said.

He took off his shirt and changed into a t-shirt and gym shorts before climbing in next to me. I couldn't help but shuffle up next to him like I did before and let him soothingly stroke my head. Despite my new worries, somehow Ethan's touch seemed to calm me down.
