Ren -

Almost five months have passed since I found out I was pregnant. Ethan still refuses to contact me. I've only heard from him when I go with Basel for check-ups and overhear him and Basel talking about Ian. They try to talk quietly in the other room but it wasn't hard to listen in.

By the sound of it things haven't been going well. Two pack members had gone to confront some of Ian's minions but were killed. Not only that but Ian has slowly stepped farther and farther into Basel's territory to where he could easily cause harm to innocent bystanders by a swing of his arm. Right in the middle of all of this was Ethan. Because he has the most experience in fighting among the younger pack members, he has been working with Basel to set up a defense and emergency offense for any attacks. I could only imagine the stress he is under. Basel has also mentioned some members blaming Ethan for everything, saying he was the one who refused to take me back.

The more I heard, the more anxious I became. I couldn't see Ethan, Aki was getting involved in this whole mess, and I was too weak to go out at this point to do anything about it. The symptoms Basel also talked about were beginning to catch up to me. Every morning I woke up vomiting and I felt myself becoming faint if I so much as went up the few stairs in the apartment.

Aki was usually out the entire day and when he was home, usually late at night, I would sleep or at least pretend to so as not to worry him.

I didn't know how much more of this I could take before I finally broke.

It was almost eleven at night and I was just laying in bed watching TV. I had only the lamp on so I wouldn't have to get up to turn the lights off if I wanted to sleep.

I hadn't heard Aki come home yet so I assumed he might have gone with Basel after work. I eventually got pretty tired so I clicked off the TV and rolled to my side. I had a cluster of blankets and pillows to hug but even then it was hard to find a position that was comfortable.

Once I finally found a decent position there in silence, I felt my stomach under the blanket. It was admittedly a strange feeling but somehow I had gotten used to it. Basel said I should be able to feel the child move soon but haven't yet. Still, I could feel the child was alright, kinda like he was telling me "It's all good in here.".

My mind wandered a bit before I was slowly drifting away until I heard a loud bang that jolted me awake. I assumed Aki got home and dropped something. I closed my eyes once again until again I was woken up by a loud noise, only this time it was a shattering.

I became unsettled but was scared to leave the room. Carefully I grabbed my phone from the bedside table and called Aki. I waited just two seconds before it finally hit me, the smell of smoke. I dropped the phone without giving Aki a chance to answer and sprinted out of the room to see half the apartment engulfed in flames.

I was hit with a black cloud of smoke provoking a coughing fit. I pulled my shirt up to my nose. Panic mode set in and I felt a rush of adrenaline as I hurried down the stairs. Like an idiot, I grabbed onto the railing to find it searing hot. I continued by switching my hand to the wall to help my unstable body from falling. In the seconds it took me to get down the stairs, the fire was already taking over more than half of the apartment. It was hard to see anything with the smoke and the heat was unbearable. I had to make my way out only by memory.

Why aren't the fire alarms going off?!

Crouched, I shuffled through the untouched areas and tried desperately not to inhale much smoke but the fabric of my shirt was only so thick. Every second, my chest and throat burned more and more.

Once I finally reached the door, I threw my body onto the handle to find it jammed.

No...No no no NO NO!!

I desperately pushed and shook the handle to no success. I felt the fire crackling, roaring and reaching closer and closer towards me from behind.

I let myself fall against the door to hopefully keep low and away from the rising smoke but it was too overwhelming.

I looked around the apartment in search of some other way out but the flames had closed me in. I was only able to spot the window and saw the had been broken.

My hope was quickly dwindling and I was begining to accept my fate when a loud beep shot into my ears.

The hallway alarms must have gone off. I heard a slight commotion and quickly began banging on the door.

"Help! Please! Open up!" I croaked through a sore throat before going into another coughing fit.

Unfortunately, the commotion headed away from the hallway and into the emergency exits. Ours was the last apartment in the hall so no one must have heard my banging as they were evacuating.

My arm slid down and I rested my head on the door.

So hot....so hard...to breathe....

The door suddenly burst open causing me to limply fall to my side.

"REN!" I heard someone yell but the roar of the flames was too loud to distinguish who.

I felt myself be lifted up and carried onto the stranger's arms. His scent was familiar so I didn't feel scared.

Despite giving it one last try, I couldn't stay awake anymore. I eventually blacked out and was unable to figure out who it was but, he smelled of cologne.
