Chapter Twenty-Seven

Ethan -

     I ended up leaving without seeing Ren. He rode with Rebecca not long after I left with the guys. The hour long car ride was mostly quiet except some short conversations between some of the other guys but my head raced too much to pay any attention to them.

     I knew there was nothing left for me to do to console Ren. He wouldn't even look at me back there. All because fucking Basel put those stupid ideas in his head about me getting killed.

...No, if there was any reason for Ren to act like that is because he saw first hand what Ian is capable of. Not only saw but was on the receiving end. Exactly the reason why I needed to get rid of him. Even if Ren hates me, as long as I feel that son of a bitch's blood on my hands will I be able to breathe.

We got as far into a clearing next to the road to the woods as we could before we began to unpack. The actual place we would set up camp was much farther ahead but the cars wouldn't take us that far. We had some guys carry the heavier stuff with quads while the rest hiked our way there.

It was about half an hour hike so I worried about Ren but I figured Akihito would be with him if anything.

The nurses set up the medical tents separately so I only briefly spotted Ren when they arrived before regrouping with everyone else. He was sitting on some log while the tents were being put up. No doubt Rebecca had him there to rest.

I walked up the meeting area before hearing some members I recognized as new recruits from Basel's pack.

"...brat leading."

"It doesn't matter. He's only alpha because of his father. Sooner or later he'll get put in his place."

"Are we all clear on the plan?" I shouted to everyone standing.

The two straightened up and nodded quickly.

I gathered the ones who were to go with me and explained the plan. Once everyone was on the same page, we headed out. 

In the back of my mind I thought of Ren. I couldn't bring myself to see him before I left but I knew I would come back. I already promised him and I can't break that promise.

We came up to a clearing near Ian's base. We heard faint footsteps in the distance and quickly stopped. In the stillness, I let myself transform partly with my hands and canines.

In the darkness, the faint figures became clearer and there stood a dozen half transformed wolves ready for a fight. I, however, knew I was the only one with blue alpha eyes among all the yellow. As the first one attacked, I fell back and let the others lung forward. I trusted them to these Betas. My target was the other alpha.
