Basel finally called me into the room after about an hour of waiting. By now, I had told Noah to go home seeing there was no reason for him to stay.
"Looks like he was roughed up real bad but no permanent damage. The only thing that's going to need to be taken care of is his foot which looks to be sprained. " Basel said covering the boy with a thin blanket having finished examining him. He was out cold ever since I carried him in.
"What do you think is his relationship with Ian?" I finally asked.
"What do you expect me to know? If anything, you knew him much better than I did." He said.
Basel was the alpha of the dominant pack in this area. I was born into his pack with my mother being his sister but after I left with Ian and all hell broke loose, it was then that I officially separated myself from him and made my own pack. Admittedly small with only Noah, and Noah's twin brother Logan but I couldn't return with Basel after what I had done. Even so, he is still there willing to provide guidance for me whenever I ask but at this point I assume it's more like uncle to nephew rather than alpha to alpha.
"Well what the hell are we going to do with him?" I looked over to the boy who was still unconscious.
"We? This is your issue. Not mine." He quickly retorted.
"Aren't you supposed to be responsible for this kind of thing?"
"I'm responsible when our issues put any risk onto or involve the community. Seeing he is a shifter himself as well as his relation with Ian, it is up to you, having found him, to figure out what to do with him."
I sighed and ran my hand through my hair in frustration. I knew he had a point but what the hell am I supposed to do?
"You took on this responsibility when you became an alpha. Its times like these where you are going to have to prove what to do with that responsibility." Basel lectured. I became more frustrated because I knew he was right.
Before I could think of anything to say, the door to the room squeaked open.
"What the heck Basel!" Rebecca immediately scolded Basel once looking down at the boy. She quickly rushed over to the bedside carrying some medical supplies.
"I thought you went home already." Basel said.
"It's not just your clinic, now is it? Look at him. You didn't even bother wiping the blood off his face." She then proceeded to pull out a rag and a bottle of hydrogen peroxide.
"Rebecca, he's..."
"I'm not an idiot. I can smell it too but look at him. He barely looks over 15 and in this state and here you are worried about him being a threat?" She the continued to wipe the dried blood from his face. Her motherly tendencies were extremely prevalent in the way she was quick to give him such gentle care. It wasn't a surprise since her and Basel already had a 9 year old themselves.
Rebecca was Basel's wife but also the one who made sure no one died in the pack from something stupid. She always had enough food at her house to feed the whole town for anyone to come by and eat. She mediated conflicts within the pack and ran the clinic whenever Basel was working at the hospital.
Had it not been for her, the clinic wouldn't even be a thing. She wanted a place for the low income families to go to when ill and were unable to pay the regular fee at the hospital. At the same time, the clinic doubled as a place for shifters to get medical help without risking it at a normal human hospital. Doing all that as well as raising her 9 year old son, it's no mystery why she was the most respected woman in the pack, or rather person, right below Basel.
