The Marine

Week 2 out of 3 weeks

    It was Monday morning and I was eating breakfast alone, which I found really unusual. I usually have someone in the kitchen with me, I searched for a note and never found any. I tried to call each of their cell phones but no one answered, this is getting strange by the minute. Then I thought they were probably out doing some errands so I turned on the TV and was watching some stupid show, I will tell you the truth I wasn't even paying attention to it. It was around 10:00 when everyone came through the door. I said, "Where have you guys been?" My mom replied, "Oh we have been around." I rolled my eyes and paid attention to the television. There was a movie on, something about Iron man it had Robert Downey Junior in it. It looked pretty good but I wish I saw the beginning so I knew what was happening. The couch sunk in and sitting next to me was Kevin and Mat sat on my other side. I said, "Why aren't you two at college?" They laughed and Kevin said, "Well baby brother we want to see you off to boot camp." I nudged him and he nudged back. We continued watching it until my mom called us in for lunch. 

    After lunch I said "I am going for a run I will be back later. While I was running I was passing by different stores and food places. This one particular store made me stop, It was called "Battle Camp" Was an odd name for a store but  I walked in, and there sitting behind a counter was a huge man, not like a fat but muscular man. He had a military haircut. In the store, there were all these weapons and clothing. I looked around. The guy said, "Hey you need any help?" I said, "No thanks sir, just browsing." He nodded and went back to the magazine he was reading. At that point, I wish I brought some money. The man looked up and said, "Hey kid what are you trying to find?" I said, "I am not trying to find anything sir I was just browsing." The man grumbled and said, "ok whatever." I shook my head and kept looking. He stood up and walked towards me and said: "Maybe I should help you, you look lost." I said, "No I just stopped here from my run to check it out, that is all sir." He looked at me confused "Why do you keep saying sir at the end of every sentence you say?" I said, "Because sir, aren't you a  marine?" He said, "How did you know?" I said "Well, for instance, you have the haircut and your stance was screaming "I am a marine beware." He laughed and said, "Yes I was kid, what is your name?" I said, "My name is Drake Matthews sir." The man looked at me in shock and said: "IS your dad George Mathews?" I nodded and said, "I knew your father." I looked at him and said "really?" he nodded and said, "Yeah we were in the same squad, we were practically brothers until he was deployed somewhere else." I said, "Oh then why don't you ever call him when you were back in the states?" He said, "Because I had no clue what your dad's number was, and I was scared because if I did, and I received bad news, I would hardly take it well, knowing your father was a pleasure." I smiled and said, "I can call my dad?" The man smiled and said, "That would be sure fine, I miss George." I used his phone but I asked first. It rang a couple of times but my dad answered "Hello?" I said, "Hey dad can you come to town in the little shop called Battle Camp, there is a guy who wants to see you again." He said, "Sure I will be there in 5 minutes." I said bye and I told the man "He will be here in five minutes." He laughed "Drake, by the way, my name is Daniel, and I remember his famous catchphrase "I will be there in five minutes", that is just like him." I laughed. Believe it or not, in five minutes he walked in and I said: "Wow dad you actually came in five minutes." My dad laughed. He stopped when he realized the man who was behind me. Daniel said, "George is that you?" My dad smiled and replied "DANIEL my man how are you?" they did this handshake but ended up hugging each other in the end. They continued to talk about what they have done in their life. My father then said "Drake here." he pulled me in and said "He enlisted to be a Marine, he leaves for boot camp in a week." after he said that I froze, I didn't know it was going to be that early, wow my mom was right weeks go by quickly. Daniel said "Congratulations man and good luck out there. Has anyone told you to keep your head up?" I nodded they smiled and I said "If it is ok with you guys I am going to go finish my run?" they nodded and I said bye to both of them,

   I was home and I was pretty tired so I took a quick shower and took a nap. I woke up to the smell of delicious dinner that I would be eating soon. Mom calls me for dinner and I ran down the stairs quickly. I got to my seat and waited for the food, man was I hungry When she finally placed down everything and we said our prayers (Yes I am Catholic) and put some food on my plate and ate and ate until I was full. My family just stared at me. I said "What? I am starving" They laughed and continued their eating. I finished and I cleared my food. My family and I watched a movie. Day after day I would be doing something different but I always ran at the same time every day: 12-3. By the time I noticed it was the end of week 2 and the beginning of week 3, this will be my last week with my family and I plan on hanging out with them the more time I have the better right?
