Chapter 24

KELLIN'S POV
*1 week later...

'Are you sure you know where you're going?' I asked my dad, uncertain he had any clue. 'Of course!' He said with an unsure look on his face. I sighed and looked out the window of the van, we were in the middle of no where. It was a wasteland. I looked at the gas monitor.

'How long has it been since we refilled the tank?' I asked, warily. 'Oh fantastic! Look! Buildings, we're heading towards the city!' He said, changing the subject. I sighed, 'That's great dad.' I said bluntly.

I looked at him expectantly, 'well?' I asked. 'Well what?' He asked, playing dumb. I rolled my eyes, 'Dad, when did you last fill up the gas?'

He sighed loudly, ' I dunno, like a few days ago...' he said, wincing as he said it. 'A few days ago!?' I screeched. 'I-It will be f-fine, they'll be a gas station in the city, we'll make it there in time.' He stuttered. As if the van heard what we said, right on cue, it started to slow down. 'Shit.' He whispered.

It would've taken any normal person at the most one hour to get from the airport to the city, but not dad. The bridge had collapsed so we had to take a de-tour, but obviously ended up incredibly lost. We spent 4 days in a gas station trying to figure out where we were going, finally we've got back on track and we've ran out of gas.

To be honest, I'm not surprised.

'Looks like we're walking to Florida...' Vic said in my ear, making me jump. I sighed, 'don't say that, we'll find something else.' I said quickly. He smirked slightly, 'mhm...'

The city was in sight but looked like it was at least 5 miles, which usually wouldn't have been much but the heat today felt hotter than the sun it's self and we had air conditioning in the van, but now we had to abandon it.

'What's going on?' Andy asked. I looked at Jeuse to explain. 'Uhm... w-we ran out of gas..?' He said, almost like a question. Alex came up behind Andy, wide-eyed. 'You're fucking kidding me right?' He said.

'I wish I was....'  Jeuse said. I heard a load of huffs and sighs followed by a few sobs. The wasteland and city was going to be the hardest to get through and we didn't have the camper van to help us.

'I guess we better grab our stuff and get going..' Vic said. I looked at him and frowned, 'you're taking this very well.' I said. He shrugged, 'well, we're not dead yet so...'

'Yet...' I repeated.

He smirked and grabbed his bag waiting by the doors. Gabe sighed, 'ready?' He asked, grabbing the door handle. We all nodded slowly. He pulled open the door. Gusts of heat flew into the van and invaded it.

'Jesus Christ!' Ashley screamed. I covered my eyes as hot sand flew into my face.

'Best place to break down huh?' Tony said. Gabe counted everyone and we set off in the boiling hot heat.

I could see the city in the distance standing amongst the dust clouds. I kicked a bird skeleton out of the way as I walked. This is like something I'd see in a nightmare.

'Guys look!' Tay said, pointing to the ground and scuffing the sand with her foot.  We all crowded round. There were white lines cracked into the ground.

'You think this used to be a road?' I asked. She nodded. I wondered what San Diego looked like now...

'Come on then, don't wanna be here all day...' Jaime said, looking around anxiously.

An hollow screeching sound echoed the plains of Nashville. It made my skin tingle in the way it would if someone scraped their nails along a black board.

'What the fuck was that?' I asked my dad, who had an extremely worried look on his face. He plastered a smile on his face, 'probably nothing.' He said.

'Dad....' I said. He sighed, 'Just.... Just creatures you would rather avoid, which we will if we get a move on and stop asking questions.' He said, quickening his pace.

'W-what do you mean creatures?' I asked. He shrugged, 'I dunno, Austin and I figured they were just really old walkers. Like proper old. I think once they're walkers for a certain amount of time they go even more... crazy. Like they start killing other walkers, they make that horrific noise and they run, dear lord they run fast..' he said.

I immediately knew I didn't want to come across one of these, So I quickened my pace along with the rest of the group who were listening too.

Every so often we'd come across a small pool of blood, glistening in the sun. No one would say anything, just simply pretend it wasn't there. Everyone knew we'd all seen them, we were just so shaken up from the whole 'old walker' thing that we decided to ignore it completely.

The same ear splitting screech echoed the wasteland again, only it was much closer. The worst part was you couldn't see much. Dust was everywhere, you could only see clearly about 10 ft around you at the most.

Fear boiled in the pit of my stomach as the noise was getting closer and closer.

'Dad can we hurry u-' my voice was cut short as a loud, screeching thing flung into me from behind the dust, clawing and snapping at my face.

'Shit!' I screamed as I tried to move it from me, the creature was strong and I had no chance of fighting it on my own.

A loud bang  echoed the skies as black liquid splatted in my face. The creature lost all movement and flopped on me, only to be dragged off by my dad seconds later.

'Thanks...' I breathed, shaken up. I took my dads hand and slowly got up, examining the dead walker.

'If they're so old, how are they so strong?' I asked my dad, who just shrugged.

I looked at the walker for a few seconds. It was slightly different to the others I'd came across.

It's eyes were all black, whereas the normal ones where a cloudy gray. It's skin was a extremely dark gray, whereas normal walkers had a light gray color. It had no lips, just razor sharp teeth that were a matching color to their eyes. I glanced down at Its chest. Various different ribs where sticking out and there were indents in its skin of the Ones that where coming out.

I looked away, suddenly feeling ill.

I looked at my dad, 'you okay?' He asked

I nodded, vic grabbing my hand and squeezing it.

'Let's just get out of here...'
