wanda's day started very nicely. she had decided to go to the market down the block, to buy some vegetables, fruit, and pastries. pietro decided to go with her.
the world had relaxed, as much as it could, after the civil war between the avengers.
the twins finally made it to the block of vendors. she bought two cups of bad coffee and they sipped while walking around.
"excuse me," a forty-something woman asked behind the two. they turned to see the source.
her hair was tied back in a messy ponytail and she had a toddler at the hip. he was a boy with shaggy, curly hair.
"yes?" wanda asked kindly.
"i just wanted to say that your practice is disgusting to me. how dare you be so blasphemes against God, how dare you declare to be a higher power than your Creator..."
"i never declared anything," wanda stated. "i use my powers to do my best to help the people, not to make them worship me."
"you are a monster, a mutant, a disgrace to this planet. your practice is disgusting, and you do not deserve to walk among us. there's a reason we burned your kind at the stake."
pietro had been silent until the point, but he had had enough.
"ma'am, you cannot speak to my sister like that. she hasn't done anything to you, she's peaceful. she does good, she does what you won't," he paused and took his sister under his arm, "excuse us."
the twins hurried away from the woman.
"don't listen to her," pietro said softly. "she's a lunatic."
"is she right? am i supposed to be burned like the others?"
"no, don't say that." they hurried on their way home. "you're kind, wanda, you don't deserve to suffer the fate of those who came before."
she looked up at her dear brother, and tucked under his arm. she was safe here, and she treasured his presence.
