Josh
Eventually Aster caught her breath, and although she still wanted to, she stopped crying. "Sorry," she mumbled, "I soaked your shirt."
"I don't care about the shirt." I wiped away the remaining tears off of her cheeks.
"I didn't tell you about it, did I?" She sighed with her face still pressed to my chest.
"How did you know that?" I asked, she could have told me before.
"You got really tense and angry, so you probably didn't know much about what happened between me and Daniel." She tightened her arms around me. "Maybe I was scared to bring it up."
"Why would you be scared?" I asked as I helped her lie down, knowing she needed rest after crying so much.
She shrugged, "Maybe I was scared of losing you."
"That's never happening."
"Yeah," she paused, "I think I get that considering these circumstances." She squeezed my hand and yawned.
"You need to get some sleep."
"Okay I will," she smiled, "If! You tell me a story."
I chuckled at her request, "Alright, what story?"
She closed her eyes and pulled the hospital blankets higher up her body. "I'm tired of hearing sad stories," a small smile stretched across her face, "I want to hear the story of how we met, and how we were before this. I want to try to remember."
"Aster I don't want to overwhelm you and you should get some rest."
"Come on Josh," she whined. "You're the only one who can help me remember."
"Okay," I gave in, "I'll tell you, but it's not normal."
"I'm pretty sure anything at this point isn't normal." She interjected. "But go on."
I chuckled and recalled the first day I saw her. "You were sitting alone at a diner on a rainy day and you looked like death."
"Way to flatter a girl, Josh." She joked.
"You just went through a shitty break up, I'm just telling it like it is." I defended.
She giggled, "Whatever just continue."
"Anyways!" I said dramatically. "I asked one of the waitresses if they knew why you were so sad and they told me a rumor that had been going around that you had lost your soulmate to another person and you'll probably never find love again."
"Wait I need to interrupt again," She said holding up a finger. "We didn't see color like right when we met? Cause that's how it's supposed to happen so now I'm confused."
"I told you it wasn't normal." She sighed and waved for me to continue. "So I ignored the rumors I was told and decided that you looked like you needed a friend. I sat down across from you and you just stared at me with this blank look like 'oh man what is it this time?'"
She laughed, "I'm pretty sure anyone would be concerned if a stranger just got up and sat with them."
"You have a point." I agreed. "We both had a similar sarcastic humor and you gave me your number so that we could hang out sometime."
Aster smiled sleepily. "I never give people my number unless it's for business," she yawned, "so you must have been pretty special."
"I don't know, maybe," I joked. "Get some sleep, I can tell you more when you wake up."
She nodded as I began to get up, the chair made a groaning noise below me. "Wait Josh," She stopped me, "Will you stay with me till I fall asleep?"
